My guess is the perp is pissed off at something related to academics and its not political at all.
They detained an Asian guy that was released and the engineering building was the location of the shooting...
Disgruntled student that felt screwed by someone over grades...
Probably one of those insane striver Asians whose parents were extremely strict and consider anything less than perfection a failure.

Also, Asians have an insane devotion to academics and can be easily triggered if it doesnt fall into place.
This type of crime at that institution, at that location....did they arrest the first Asian because hes Asian or because he was wearing black?

Error on the side of not giving bad info would be my guess.
If there are conflicting witness descriptions best not to give one description then have to adjust to go another direction. Go with the info that is agreed upon.
