I'm surprised the people bitching about their tax dollars going towards social programs, aren't pissed that the state is willing to spend admit $350-400 thousand dollars to lock up someone who stole $31 in candy.

I'm pissed about taxes when I pay for a deadbeat to have food/shelter when they refuse to work. I'm proud to pay for a chronic piece of shite to be removed from my society.

How much of those costs were from career shoplifters? Your example is extremely flawed to the context of this particular case.

I'm curious where he raised $500 to get out of jail when he's a heroin addict stealing snickers bars.

ETA: And I'm not a fan of setting obscenely high bails in order to extort a guilty plea from defendants, but this guy is facing life and he gets out on $5,000.

frick it, Belize here I come!

Unfortunately I could find no study focused entirely on this one individual. But part of this debate has to include the unbelievable cost that even a non-violent criminal can have on society. There are people that commit hundreds of property crimes per year. Private property rights are THE most essential rights in a free society. So stealing other people's shite, is hardly a victim-less crime. And the same people do it over and over, their whole lives, at a cost to society that far exceeds the cost of incarceration. Just the cost in extra law-enforcement alone is insanely high. If a guy can't keep his hands in his own pockets, and doesn't learn his lesson, and won't stop stealing other people's shite, he deserved to be locked up.

Cool, let's just get rid of shoplifting and theft laws. We don't want to put them in jail.

It's not like stealing from a convenience store hasn't led to other crimes before.

First it's the store, then it's walking in the street. Next thing you know you're trying to steal a cop's gun and an entire city goes up in flames.

he adds insult to injury...not too bright

a jury would never send him to the clink for that long

the jury, if they knew their power, would convict the law for being absurd

I'm afraid the Candy Man is doomed

I have no problem with this by itself but I know a guy who was released from prison after 1.5 years for driving drunk and killing a guy on his way to work the night shift. This dude is about to get 20 for non violent crimes?

You break the law you pay the price but be consistent.

The whole $32k per year number is probably the entire cost divided by # of prisoners. That is misleading, likely on purpose. The cost for an additional prisoner is the variable cost per head. A lot of the costs are going to be incurred anyway after you get past a certain number. At the very least they are semi-fixed.

There needs to be a lower cost solution overall that yanks these types of people out of humanity at large. Maybe a "No Escape" style island, without Ray Liotta.

He's a loser no doubt but 20-life is too much. Too much money too. This doesn't help Louisiana's budget.

So today, he came to court high and was jailed.
quote:

A New Orleans man at risk of a lengthy prison term after his arrest on suspicion of stealing candy bars from a Dollar General store in Central City last December was jailed Tuesday (April 5) after coming to court high.

Jacobia Grimes tested positive for cocaine, marijuana, opiates and Oxycodone before a scheduled hearing in his case, a violation of his pretrial bond. Criminal District Court Judge Franz Zibilich ordered Grimes to be drug tested at the request of Orleans Parish prosecutors, then remanded him into custody after receiving the results.

Unless he's damn near killed someone, I'd say more of a nuisance.

This is part of the reason the state budget is all fricked up.

If I'm a judge overseeing his case, I'm willing to offer a bit of mercy and leniency if his taste in sweets was it least classy.

probably wasn't a "PayDay"

Considering the amount of money this trial & incarceration may cost the state, let's all hope it was 31 "100 grand" candy bars.
