Public up to manager (Big 4 if possible) then industry. You’ll step into much more money that way.
Or, if you have the skills, pursue the partner track. At Big 4 the money can be insane. The hours are too.....

I did 6 years of public then went into industry. Got a ton of experience that I don't think I could've gotten going straight into industry. Stepped into industry at a lot higher salary too.

I've read that on average it takes about 2 years to make Senior then about 3 more years to make Manager. Is it very selective to make Manager, or is it more about just staying in public long enough?

You won't make it to year 5 if you don't have the skills and/or work ethic to make it to manager so yes and no.

I work for a smaller CPA firm in New Orleans. Our clients are mostly local so there isn’t much travel.
My curent career path is to stay in the public sector doing audits until the right opportunity arises and I make the jump to industry.

Public for sure. If making partner isn't for you, at least stay for manager. You can then leave public accounting a get a controller position.
If you go industry it could take 15-20 years to make controller.
Going industry doesn't make sense until you're a manager at a CPA firm.
Also, I started as a staff 1 at 30. Age doesn't matter.
I could type more but i am driving. Pm me if you want more info from a non traditional route CPA.

'm in my late 20's and don't know if I want to go through the grind of working at a Big 4 while studying for the CPA
You likely won’t want to live this sort of life given your age. If you have wife and kids that makes it even less attractive.
I am currently back in public at a small firm after big 4 then industry. You learn a ton in public. It is pretty terrible work though. I think about a career change nearly every day.
My industry experience was a little different. More of a bad culture fit than bad job. If I could do it over I wouldn’t have left, but that has everything to do with having a kid now.

Short answer, it's more about attrition. If you stick it out you will make Manager in 5 or 6 year. Big 4 has more rigid career path, where you have to work x amount of years versus versus pure merit. I even skipped a level at a top 10 firm.

The Houston area is great for industry. If the O&G market keeps gradually improving, there will continue to be many opportunities for someone with your background.

Im going to get my masters in accounting after i finish undergrad accounting degree and try to go into public accounting while studying to take my CPA. Was told the experience gained in public are good for a good career and will move to private after that. Get back to yall in a few on how it works out

Take the CPA before you start. Trust me on this. In Louisiana you're now eligible to sit for the exams at 120 hours. You'll thank yourself later.

So if I make senior in public, what job titles should I look for in regards to industry?
Really depends on the company size you are shooting for. Smaller company you can go straight to manager, with one or two staff/clerks reporting to you and a Controller/CFO over you. F500 companies, you could be at a lower senior level only working with a certain product line or location.

I went big 4 to small firm and then will likely go industry when the right position opens up.

Pretty sure it’s 150. Did they change it?

Yeah you still have to get the 150 to get licenced, but you're eligible to sit at 120 as of like 2 years ago I think.
