So it seems the consensus is to try to make Manager at a Big 4, then jump to industry.
Do the Big 4 in Houston all have pretty much the same reputation, or is there one you recommend?

The cultures are a little different at each firm, in my opinion. One isn't necessarily better than another, just different. Just find the one you think you're the best fit at and where you could see yourself working.

Accounting just sucks arse. I’d rather suck dicks for a living.
Use your accounting degree for something else in finance. Get into I-banking or PE or Trading. I know traders with degrees in english.

no....
PWC is known to be a harsher environment but they are #1 right now. EY is more of a warm fuzzy, employee-friendly Big 4 as is Deloitte. Not too familiar with KPMG.
I'd suggest EY then Deloitte.

My wife was PWC advisory NYC, got out as soon as she hit mgr. Went from 365 travel to 40 hours industry job making more in a low cost area.

During certain times of the year the 90 hr work weeks will take their toll after a few weeks of doing that.
However, with PWC you can get in on a fast track and advance faster through the system. Then once advanced switch over.
I don't know much about accounting but my wife is one. Was making a good salary in Baton Rouge, not quite 6 figures. But in 4 years since moving to Houston has doubled her salary and works fewer hours.

Public is basically to get a variety of experience in several different industries. During busy season get ready to work a lot of overtime and weekends. Once you put your time in, most move on to industry or other sectors for a more normal work/life balance. Very few stay on the partner track.
A lot of times those clients you work for will end up leading to a job down the line.
With that said, you could also take an internal audit career path outside of public and move up the ladder through a company that way as well.

Bump to see if anyone else has opinions

I loved my time in public accounting. I stayed until manager, then went to industry for a while before completely changing careers. I wish I had stayed til senior manager in hindsight.
I was in an advisory practice, so i very rarely worked more than 60 hours in my 6 years. I did get pulled onto a few audits and worked in excess of 100 hours a week a few times though.
