If I owned a store, I would hire this guy in a second.

This is a darned recent policy, then.

Literally just over a year ago in a prosecution clinic I did, I was prepping my Academy manager-witness for an upcoming misdemeanor theft trial. The manager, of course, approached the defendant as he was leaving the store after allegedly stuffing some gun ammo in his jacket pocket and attempting to leave without paying.

No public outcry or firing then. Manager was black, defendant was white FWIW.

In your case, I assume from your wording that he didn't try to physically restrain the guy?

Is there a difference in the policy between asking someone to stop while you call the authorities and tackling them?

Academy should be banned from being able to sell guns. Any company that would let a stolen firearm just walk out the building is going to get someone killed should not have the right to sell firearms.

Didn’t we just do this thread with Home Depot? This is standard policy for any company. It’s a liability issue if the manager gets shot or otherwise hurt.
Well let's fix that so it won't be a liability anymore

I am usually a wait and see all the facts guy, and not get too hurt, but I really feel like places that sell guns have a moral and ethical obligation to stop theft of guns at a greater level than someone stealing a shirt. I think a companies policies should have to go above and beyond to stop theft. Something tells me there is a small business owner going to hire this guy.

I agree with that for guns.

But if I’m working at Walmart, I don’t give a frick if a guy runs out with a TV.

not for Academy provided they took all reasonable efforts to prevent such theft...

There is small liability exclusion called shopkeepers privilege , but it requires a fairly stringent set of standards be met, and only shields the company from the liability of being sued by the thief.

I don't think companies should be totally protected from the liability of employees being hurt on the job. Workplaces injuries are worthy of compensation.

I would say having no policy to restrict movement once a customer comes in possession of a gun isn't a unreasonable effort. I mean this could be stopped if you just had the gun on a wire, when you handed it to the customer so they couldn't take it out of the building.

There's a big difference between stealing power tools and guns an ammo by a guy who overtly claimed to go on a shooting spree.

If they let him go and he killed someone, Academy would've been sued into oblivion.

Don’t the guns have trigger locks on them though?

Usually not. Part of looking at the gun in the store is seeing if you like the grip, feel, and trigger pull.

The only people who don't get fired these days are the ones who do nothing.

It apparently was in my case. If things have changed, so be it. But from what I gather from the Home Depot thread, even approaching the suspect is against "policy," and my guy sure did.

They're basically saying 'Don't endanger our customers inside our store- let the POS endanger everyone outside with the pistol he stole from us!'

The manager showed great community responsibility, IMHO. I hope he is rewarded with a new employer who appreciates him.
