This is interesting. According to this piece, there are college professors who make as much as some college football coaches. David Silvers at Columbia and Zev Rosenwaks at Cornell - combined salary of around $11.7 million or so.

The article below has some out-dated numbers, but still interesting

Sadly....those who can't do, actually teach.

You realize that these are renowned physicians with specialties whose salarylies are also based upon their clinical practice (which likely is their main workload)?

Of course academia can pay well. Most well paid college professors didn’t just start teaching straight out of their doctoral programs but spent decades practicing in their field before transitioning into the classroom and many remain active through clinical work or research.

College profs aren’t high school teachers. They make decent salaries.

That isn't the norm. But I would guess you're fine with the coaches' salaries but not the professors, is that your point?

I know they make good money. I posted this just because I found it (them and their salaries) interesting. I am not questioning it in anyway. I believe it’s well-earned.

Only a small fraction of that is their university salary. The rest is clinical practice, consulting, and grants.

Most professors don't make that much in the big scheme of things.

Their salaries are well-earned. I am a red-blooded capitalist through and through who loves investing in securities markets and entrepreneurship.

It depends on their research work. The money is made from grants and funds. This is the reason why academia is a very nasty and competitive business.

If they are good, they might have a patent or 2. The royalties will keep coming.

bullshite.

Maybe in select sciences and engineering fields (and even then, I’d put money on many of them being career academics).

Professors are overpaid and it’s because of the bubble that is the American university system. English faculty members are pulling in $100k+ per year to teach 2-3 courses a semester and write for publications (that are closed off to everyone except other specialized academics). They get waayyyyyy more time off than K12 teachers and have flexible schedules throughout the week.

You should also hear about their sabbaticals for research or whatever bullshite reason they have for taking them. I knew one professor at Auburn who was granted a full year fully funded study in Ireland because he was writing a book on some esoteric topic in 18th century Irish lit. Another I know spends her summers leading study abroad excursions with students and was granted a course release for it.

Yeah I’m jelly. Big time.
