With our first, the wife and I decided on the screening test but that the outcome didn't matter...we would do our best to raise him.

I'm glad those test are available and I would want to know before the birth.

That said, I certainly understand if someone takes the other route and I can't say I didn't give it serious consideration.

When they asked us if we wanted to test for downs we said no. No matter what the result it wouldn't change anything. You decide to have kids, you accept what you're given and be a parent. Sometimes they can teach you more than you can understand.

The only 100% positive test for DS is an amniocentesis where the DNA can be analysed for the extra chromosome. There is a wide range of this disability - we live it daily and until you have, making assumptions about quality of life, burden of raising a child with DS, and all the other crap in this thread is bull shite. I hope that those with that attitude about children with DS never have a "typical" child that becomes disabled through their lifetime and you are burdened by it.

The other thing you may want to evaluate is the fact that you or your spouse could be carrying the extra chromosome as well, although rare if you are there will always be a chance of passing it on.

To me, its no different than "Why should I have to put up with this individual at work who makes my life more difficult?" Since he inconveniences me and makes my life harder, do I have the right to end his life? No. See its not me who has the authority to grant and end life. Someone GREATER than me is the only one with that authority.

That's the dumbest analogy I've ever heard. You can quit your job or fire the dipshit if you're in the proper position. It doesn't take more than a second's thought to know your point is ridiculously stupid.

I can also leave the child I don't want and allow the government or someone else to take care of it.
The point is, humans shouldn't assume the right to determine whether other humans have the right to live. Alive is alive. Inside or outside the mother. God decides life, man doesn't. It's mind boggling to see that so many people are confident enough in their own wisdom and knowledge to say that this or that human can live and this or that one can't.

Ok, so from that logic, who the hell are you to pull out? Shouldn't every act of sex end in a climax without birth control? Isn't that what sex is for? So everyone who pulls out and uses birth control prevents another human life from entering the world that was never intended.

Clearly Idiocracy is something we need to strive for. Stupid people should be having less kids. On the contrary, they're by far having the most. Granted there's a decent chance that you're one of the Duggars, so I apologize if I offended your rabbit breeding factory.

:) No sir, man has choice as to how he/she goes about pursuing children or not. The results, however aren't up to him ;)
I would prefer to see wisdom prevail in all situations, but as we have been given the right to make choices, this is one choice we have. Many make unwise choices in many arenas.
No need to apologize, I'm not easily offended. Even if I was, that would be my problem, not yours.
