Join a rugby team. Birmingham has a decent squad.
You'll meet tons of new people as the home team always hosts the away team for a few beers after the game. You will also push yourself physically probably further than you ever have.

All in all, its a great social network, physically challenging, and you will definitely get that accomplishment feeling the first time you lay out an opposing player or score your first try (touchdown).

This is the most extrinsic way I've ever seen anyone come out of the closet. Best of luck with the buttstuff.

Are you into the outdoors? Get into hiking...hit some challenging mountain trails. If there's none in your area, Birmingham is only a few hours from Smokey Mountains and there's some challenging trails to hike there.

I moved and lost easy access to my hobby (saltwater fishing) due to location.

Picked up triathlon. It can take up most of your time to get your mind off of things. It is obviously challenging. And you will feel so much better on a day to day basis when you are in shape.

Doesn't even need to be full or half ironman level. Oly distance will take 9-10 hours of your week and challenge the hell out of you. Plus, you can mix in a good bit of travel to do races all over the place. Usually a decent community of new people to meet as well.

Become a vigilante and kill the murderers and rapists that get out of prison on technicalities. Don't get caught.

Do a triathlon. There arent very many people who can say they started training and ended up completing one.
