Audi is the worst car Ive ever replaced timing chain on. A timing job literally totals a lot of Audis due to cost. Multiple chains, tensioners and guides. Can easily be $6k-$8k to replace.

Like you would know what changing a timing chain entails. You're just a used car salesman.

Ferrari also used to build engines with the head bolted directly to the block with no gasket.

They are definitely the front runners in automotive engineering

Radial engine timing

Looks like something a steampunk would have laying around.

If the heads and block are lapped it's probably better.

This is an interesting bit of Ferrari lore I was unaware of. Did they have interlocking surfaces to prevent leaks? I know it has been done on air-cooled engines by the likes of Citroen but a water-cooled engine seems like a beast to get to seal at least prior to CNC. There have been monoblock engine head combinations in F1 and Indy car.

Even if you stay with sports car manufacturers it is hard to ignore the Germans, exhibit #1 is Porsche.

A great example is the F40 vs the 959. The F40 outside maybe the Kevlar body is an extremely basic car compared to the 959 which was an exercise in technology. The F40 was a tube frame car for god's sake.

It really wasn't until after the late '80s with Fiat taking near-complete ownership of Ferrari that it could even be considered a modern car company.

This is coming from a life long fan of the Scuderia and a card-carrying member of the Tifosi.

This is going back to when Mark Donohue started driving for The Captain.

He was sorting cars for Ferrari, and yes, they leaked.

He wasn't a fan.

I understand your point, but Mercedes-Benz was designing and engineering long before there was Ferdinand Porsche.

Hell, Karl Benz is credited for inventing the first, for all intents and purposes, automobile. MB introduced a multitude of worlds firsts in numerous cars. Mercedes built the Streamliner that went 270mph in the 1930's, and let's not forget the engineering marvel of the 300SL Gullwing.

That is a Gnome rotary radial engine. Unique in that the crank was fixed and the cylinders and prop rotated around it.
Interesting concept to say the least.
