I’ve seen some fricked up things on the bad subways but thankfully non-violence ever.
The one thing people always say in the big city is they’ll take a bus most of the time rather than taking a subway because bus drivers absolutely are able to stop shite immediately where sub drivers have a whole lot going on

Absolutely looked like a prank of some sort, but I'm not so sure the people attacked were actually in on it. And I am not saying that makes it right.

I think I’ve seen this before. As an NYC resident, if find it kind of funny. If you start to actually feel threatened, just give that thing a swift kick to the face.
