A new study from researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that a slow-growing variant form of Lyme bacteria caused severe symptoms in a mouse model. The slow-growing variant form of Lyme bacteria, according to the researchers, may account for the persistent symptoms seen in ten to twenty percent of Lyme patients that are not cured by the current Lyme antibiotic treatment.

Ticks are like dirty needles and people with Lyme often have other tick born diseases. Together, they can often overwhelm a patients immune system to the point they remain chronically ill, even with treatment.

Another pernicious component of Lyme is what the study calls a slow growing form.

When exposed to conventional treatment Lyme often changes into the slow growing form, allowing it to survive.

quote:

The study, published March 28 in Discovery Medicine, also found that these “persister” Lyme bacteria were resistant to standard single-antibiotic Lyme treatments currently used to treat Lyme patients, while a three-antibiotic cocktail eradicated the Lyme bacteria in the mouse model.

What this study shows, at least in mice, is that the correct cocktail of drugs can kill it.

Interesting stuff.

Kinda funny incident last week...

Mom sold her house in AR, while literally loading truck with her stuff, as the buyer is doing the final walkthrough before he heads to closing, Mom and I are standing in kitchen...just as buyer rounds corner I feel bug on my outer forearm, as I raise up in a semi head scratching type position I see it is a white spotted deer tick and knowing the buyer is coming I quickly toss tick onto marble kitchen counter where it lands on its back so it is rather inconspicuous instead of walking across counter with the movement sure to catch the buyers eye.

Sure enough buyer walks by without noticing tick possibly carrying spotted fever or lyme and we finish loading and leave disease prone AR ticks behind us.

The End.

Thank god. One of the potential side effects of Lyme Disease is the body’s inability to process the proteins in meat (especially red meat); the idea of being both chronically sick AND unable to eat meat is just a bit too much for me to handle.

I should note - the cocktail described in the study would be very expensive.

It would require a peripherally inserted central catheter, and some very expensive IV drugs.

This still constitutes groundbreaking news in what has been an understudied field. And the first promise of an actual cure.

they’ve had it all along. You don’t weaponize bugs without the antidote

Alpha-gal syndrome has nothing to do with Lyme disease other than getting it from a tick bite.

You can get it after being bitten by the right tick even if said tick never has been a carrier of Lyme

Well this information is a bit concerning to me as I am suspected to have been bitten by a Lyme carrying tick on June 27th. Had all the classic symptoms fever, joint pain, fatigue, bullseye rash etc. but like a dumbass had confused my tick species and didn’t think what I was bit by could be a carrier.

Went to doc and got some antibiotics plus blood test exactly two weeks after the bite. Everything I had read said if you catch it in the first couple weeks it shouldn’t be any problem and the doctor didn’t act concerned

Blood test came back negative for Lyme BUT they said it may not show up yet and we will test again in about a month AND it said I had Rocky Mountain spotted fever at some point in the past but there wasn’t a large amount of it so apparently it was a minor case or some. Idk, I really don’t know wtf is going on but I feel fine whatever that’s worth

80 to 90% of lyme disease is easily cured with common antibiotics.

I suspect the failure rate is much higher.

Be aware - antibody testing, if that’s what your doctor ordered, is often inaccurate. Given the immunosuppressive effects of many tick born illnesses, many patients do not test positive. Or only test positive on some bands.

It’s absolutely true that most people recover from Lyme with minimal treatment.

Given the risks though, it’s prudent on a personal level to be very aggressive.

When I was a kid I played outside a lot and have pulled numerous ticks off my body.

One night when I was about 13, I was getting ready to lie down in bed and jerk it. I felt a weird spot on the very bottom of my balls. I thought it might be a little ingrown hair or something so I stopped picking at it. After about a week, I had enough and just yanked and pulled. Son of a bitch was a half full tick. It had been there probably a week.

I seriously wonder if I have Lyme after all my tick bites. That shite can frick you up and cause chronic fatigue, immune problems, etc. It can frick with your brain and cause all sorts of symptoms that might look like psychiatric illness (like depression).

(Yes, this is a 100% true story).

About the only good thing about fire ants I know of is that they prey on ticks.I live on family land ,when I was kid we would get covered with ticks. One thing we did for entertainment was pick ticks off granpa’s dog and feed them to the chickens. No fire ants in those days.Been living here 20 years and seldom get a tick.I’ve had several dogs since living here and they seldom get a tick either.
I lived in Ozarks couple of years and would get covered with ticks if I went out in the wood summer, early fall.No fire ants there.

Well, this thread has throughly freaked me out.

Been doing a lot of lawn work at my mother’s house the past several weekends and found a tick a couple of weeks ago on my underarm. Just pulled that little bastard off and went about my business.

Then I read this thread. And now I’m thinking about how the bite area was slightly swollen for a few days. WebMD only made things worse.

I would do a pcr tests for Babesia and Bartonella. Both are common co infections.

Both infections respond to Doxycycline though.

And the scary thing is that Lyme disease lab tests are not very accurate.

If it makes you feel any better there’s no telling how many times I’ve pulled a tick off my body and this bite reacted differently than any of the others ones so If there was an issue you’d likely know
