An HDTV from Sony cost $8,000 in 1999, which is the equivalent of almost $12,000 today.

I remember buying a shitty gateway 42" tv for $2500 in 2000.
My dad paid more than that for a VCR in 1981.

I remember sending two of my guys to pick up a 50" plasma from the gateway store in 04 for our owners wife as a gift for our owner. It was over 5k.

He got pissed because it was only 50"

My first PC cost an arm, and a leg, in 1994. Back when everyone else still had Pentium 75 MHz processors, I bought the Pentium 100 MHz. I paid $1500 for it. A year later, the Pentium 120 MHz came out. It was cheaper than my 100.

ETA: The first 20 inch regular TV I bought, was over $350. Bought a 32" HDTV for less than $300 two or three years ago.

My parents paid over $200 for an HP calculator in the 70's when my brother was in Civil Engineering at LSU.

I bought my 50 inch Panasonic plasma tv for 2500 off the wall at Best Buy in 2007. Still works like new today.

That’s nothing, you should see how expensive a bitcoin was when I bought one.

If only the govt would have gotten involved it would have been cheaper.

And... of course, governments were. But, it didn't fit your narrative did it. The Japanese government, for example, poured tons of money into the early development and standardization of HDTV so the Sony was indeed cheaper than it would have been without government involvement.

Funny thing is my last VCR was even more expensive than that, it retailed for $1600 in 1989/90. The JVC S8000U was the best consumer VHS VCR ever made simply amazing what that VCR could do.

That’s some serious inflation.
