96% of prisoners testing positive for coronavirus have no symptoms

Reuters.com link
It is becoming more and more evident that the virus is vastly more prevalent than initially believed, and that only a small fraction of people who get it show any significant symptoms. I was initially hoping for declining numbers of new cases so that we can get the economy back going, but I now believe this new evidence showing how small a fraction actually get very sick from this may be the factor that reopens the economy.

They started with the Marion Correctional Institution, which houses 2,500 prisoners in north central Ohio, many of them older with pre-existing health conditions. After testing 2,300 inmates for the coronavirus, they were shocked. Of the 2,028 who tested positive, close to 95% had no symptoms.

As mass coronavirus testing expands in prisons, large numbers of inmates are showing no symptoms. In four state prison systems — Arkansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia — 96% of 3,277 inmates who tested positive for the coronavirus were asymptomatic, according to interviews with officials and records reviewed by Reuters. That’s out of 4,693 tests that included results on symptoms.

We can't use any new data that contradicts the narrative that we won't be safe for the next 18 months

Turns out buttfricking your fellow man is the cure to it all

If you remember, most infectious disease experts said months ago that 70-80% of the population would get the virus within the next year. Social distancing won't keep that from coming true. It will just drag out the drama.
It's time to go about our business and let the chips fall where they may.

This is consistent with the antibody tests coming out. If they are correct, the majority of people who get this never even know it.
That Ohio prison test is mind boggling though. They tested 2300 and got 2028 positive results? Can that be right?

Yea - I agree with the confusion about the validity of antibody testing, but the article doesn't mention antibody testing - they imply that they were doing regular testing for presence of virus. I may be misreading it, but that's how I read it.

This is happening in Orleans Parish Prison as well, where they tested all inmates (750). 105 positives, 5 symptomatic.

It does seem outrageously high, but it matches what the other states are reporting.

Should have been the decision the moment it became clear that the health care system would not be overwhelmed (i.e. a few weeks ago).

Yep. Obviously, a virus like this will spread faster through a prison than regular society, but this data is amazing. Makes me think it is very likely that > 50% of people in large cities like New York, or a setting like a large university, could have had it and never even known it.

WE'RE ALL GONNA GET IT.
Need to reopen the economy immediately.
Work on a vaccine in the meantime.

You got a link or source for that? Would like to read it.

No it isn't.
Or rather, not to this extent.
I wouldn't have bat an eye at 30 or even 50%.
96% asymptomatic is a bit much. There is something there that is off. Could be a test that is heavily non specific compared to other coronaviruses perhaps.

Virus might not have started as a political football but it sure is one now. Epidemiologists certainly have been saying 70 plus % of the population will get it. Realistically 1.5/2 years to a vaccine. The social ramifications of a the economy being crashed will be much worse than the virus. It is beyond time to get USA back to work.

That is absolutely 100% correct.

I understand being skeptical, but it's not just one state or one system reporting these numbers. There are 4 states included in this report, and their data seems consistent between states. Pretty incredible if true.
Also, pretty incredible that like 88% of the prisoners in that one Ohio prison were positive, and 70% overall among the 4 states. Shows that the virus is very transmissible in that setting, but causes very few serious illnesses.
