I am willing to give that guy some latitude. But, Syria remains very much a failed State, rather than a trading partner, host to US military bases, or an actual ally.
You can also show our leaders meeting with the Pakistanis. You know, the guys who hid Bin Laden for a decade. Or the Qataris, who provided decades of safe haven to the heads of Hamas. They are actual allies, but play both sides.
