Is this going to be bad or will all the tsunami warnings be canceled soon as we usually see? I hope they get canceled. For such a strong earthquake, I am surprised we are not hearing reports of damage. Was it far enough off the coast? Also, how deep was this earthquake? The horrible tsunamis we saw in Indonesia and Japan were very very shallow, that seems to be key to having severe tsunamis.

My wife is in Santiago, Chile. She just texted & said it was intense. She is from San Francisco so she knows about earthquakes. She said they are fine in Santiago thank goodness. Keep any updates coming.

That graphic doesn't explain how a tsunami can travel 5,000 miles and be noticed as more than a decent looking wave breaking on shore. It blows my mind that Hawaii is worried about this.

so I got a coworker who he and his wife went to chile this week. I have no idea the geographic location just know he said chile. whats the vaction spot of chile and would this earthquake affect him? should I be worried?

It isn't a normal wave. It's like the whole fricking ocean suddenly rises 10 feet and stays there for awhile with massive currents that will sweep away anything (buildings, whatever).

There are plenty of them. Chile is probably the most modern country south of the Rio Grande. Santiago itself is nice but there's plenty to do on the beaches, in the mountains, etc. Hope your buddy isn't on the beach tonight but they probably have a pretty good warning system.

My friend flew to Vina Del Mar in Region 5 this past week. It's pretty and on the beach, and they are celebrating their Independence day this weekend. She said it wasn't too bad there. Don't know if that helps.
