You think people on the Gulf Coast would get that, but I suppose Katrina kinda confuses some folks with 18 foot surges. 18 feet wasn't required to do the damage.

10 foot wave at it's crest before it even breaks.

That's high. It gets even higher when it breaks.

yeah I don't think people get this...what's the general rule of thumb? A wave breaks when the depth of the water is 1/7th it's wavelength?

from TheEarthquakeGuy on reddit:

quote:

What you need to know:
Magnitude: Originally a 7.9, but since has been upgraded to an 8.3, this is a very big event for the area. Currently we have people saying they've felt this for up to 2 minutes.
Depth: Sitting at a depth of 12.5km, making this a very shallow event. This has contributed to the tsunami risk and warning that has been associated with the event. More on that in a moment.
Intensity of Shaking: Currently rated as a VIII or Severe in terms of shaking. The likelihood for damage is high with this event.
Expected Fatalities:
Probability Number of Deaths
22 No deaths
40 Between 1-10
29 10-100
7 100-1,000
1 1,000-10,000
Expected Damages:
Probability Expected Costs (US$)
3 Less than 1m
31 1m-10m
51 10m-100m
14 100m-1b
1 1b-10b
Tsunami: There is currently a warning in place for Chile, with waves of up to 3 metres expected. There are also warnings for Peru and Ecuador as a tsunami between 0.3-1m could reach the coastline.

Yeah. I guess I just think of Katrina, and what a 30 ft wave did.

I saw the images taken at Stennis of the first wave. It's one of the few images I keep in my mind that still freaks me out.

For depth limited breaking it is height equals .78 the depth. And for steepness limited breaking is height equals 1/7 wavelength. Those numbers are both for regular waves.
