Last in a series of confused nighttime melees which until this point the US had gotten the worst of. This time the battleships Washington and South Dakota sank the Japanese battleship Kirishima using radar directed gunfire, turning back a resupply convoy and ultimately sealing the fate of the Japanese defenders on Guadalcanal. My Grandfather was in the 1st Marine Division when they left New Zealand. They were told they were headed to Alaska. They had cold weather gear and WW1 guns. They got dropped off on Guadalcanal and the Navy left them while Japan brought in thousands of troops on the other side of the island. He fought in Tarawa, Sipan and Tinian but he never talked much about Guadalcanal. After Guadalcanal there wasn't enough Marines left in the 1st Division so they transferred them to the 2nd Division.

Is this the one where the navy tried to make up for abandoning the marines to their fate on the beach without most of their supplies?

They probably don’t talk about that first one much in Annapolis.

I have always thought its very unfortunate the European theatre is the sexy side of WWII and the Marines pretty much get no "fanfare"

The 1st division and the rest of the marines went through true hell and just dont get the recognition they deserve.

Not even the 101st wanted any part of Japan

I dont believe they wanted to do that.
It was pretty early in the war and assets were thin.

The first USS Juneau (CL-52) was a United States Navy Atlanta-class light cruiser sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal 13 November 1942. In total, 687 men, including the five Sullivan brothers, were killed in action as a result of its sinking.

A few hundred miles away, a Japanese staff officer was also penning a report, an appreciation of the Pacific war situation just before the two battles of Guadalcanal, which read, ‘It must be said that the success or failure in recapturing Guadalcanal Island, and the vital naval battle related to it, is the fork in the road which leads to victory for them or us.’

That was the day that the tide turned in the Pacific War. From that point on the US had the initiative and never lost it.

Actually Midway was when the Japs lost the initiative, but Guadalcanal bought us time and proved that we could beat the Japanese army in the jungles.
