The Third Marine Division commander at Iwo Jima was LSU graduate Graves B. Erskine, from either Winn or Caldwell Parish, depending on the source. He also developed the first program helping men transition from military to civilian life.
I believe his son was from Caldwell parish & his grandson lived in Monroe.

Millennials would have been decimated within minutes. If they even showed up at all.

I met an old Marine who stormed the beaches on Iwo and he told me we killed those Son of a bitches by the thousands. He said we burn them with flamethrowers we shot him we blew them up anything we could. He then tells me they would cut their heads off and stick them on a bayonet in the sand and say you mess with the United States Marine Corps and this is what happens

Only 1,083 of the over 21,000 Japanese solders were taken hostage. Well over 90% of them on Iwo Jima died. Those were hard men on their own right. Thank God we didn’t have to invade mainland Japan.

Yes, they were pretty hard-core but so were the Marines

I got to meet RV Burgin. He was featured in The Pacific series on TV. He wrote the book Islands of the damned. Hell of a guy.

Yep, there was a Graves Erskine that lived in Monroe. I think he graduated from St. Fred’s about the same time I did from Neville.
No clue his grandfather was a Devil that led the assault at Iwo. I don’t think the grandson joined the Marines.

War is pretty stupid when you think about it. Still necessary though because they bombed Pearl Harbor. Can't let that slide.

Had a chance to hike Iwo Jima, really a surreal moment

Agreed. I was fortunate enough to attend the 55th commemorative anniversary on Iwo. It was the first time that veterans from both sides stood face to face on the island since the war ended. After experiencing that, I found an even deeper level of respect for all those who had gone before me.

I was a combat Marine in Vietnam. Third Marine Division and know this history quite well. It never ceases to impress.
War is such a paradox. You have to kill to save lives. Unless you’ve been in combat it’s hard to truly fathom its horrors. It is quite difficult to put into words. You literally become quite insane and become like an animal fighting for its life.
Those guys on Iwo were scarred for life and changed forever.

My grandfather, also Iwo Jima Silver Star and purple heart recipient. 4th Division, 2nd battalion, 25th Marines. 81 mm mortar squad leader. His citation is for action on March 1, a couple weeks after it all started. He survived. But he died a couple years before I was born, I never had the honor of meeting him.
