My grandfather fought in this battle -- he had just turned 19 that September.
He'd mention it on occasion but never in any detail. He died in 2006 and I wish I'd gotten an oral history from him on tape.
He wasn't an educated man and he drank a bit too much but he was a good story teller. I miss him.

My grandfather fought in this battle and was a POW. I wish I knew more as well. He didn't like talking about it either.

One of my high school coaches lived around the corner from me and I grew up playing basketball in his driveway. Always smiling and fairly quiet. Taught civics at school. Last year I was reading an article in the Morning Advocate about WWII veterans volunteering at the WWII Museum. Sure enough the article was about John Rogers my neighbor. He had led tank assaults at Battle of the Bulge and was among the first to find the prisoner camps afterwards. He never said a word about this.He shared his stories at the Museum and sadly he died just last spring. The Greatest Generation by far.

My Great Uncle Steyr fought in the Bulge. He was a tall, looming hulk of a man, even into his 80s. He rarely talked about the war, but the story I was told was that he was freezing. He saw a German around his size walking by, came out of the brush and stabbed the German to death and stole his coat.

Most of those men that came back did drink a little too much and smoked like chimneys. That was the way they coped and somehow they managed to survive without a fricking support dog, safe space, or a therapist and all they did was lead this country to its most prosperous time.

Watch the Movie, battle of the bulge
“Battleground” is much better. Along with “Band of Brothers”, far more historically accurate.

Lousy movie "Battle of the Bulge". Like others said, Band of Brothers. Episode 6: Bastogne

A friend of mine's dad died in the 80s of cancer. On his deathbed he told his children he fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Did not like talking about it.
