And, yet, we're even fatter as a nation.

My paw paw fought in it and lived to tell about it.

Can’t believe Eisenhower didn’t even think about the Ardennes.

Greatest? I doubt it. Costly, but not the greatest.

My grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge under Patton. Only thing he ever said about it was that a Mexican boy pushed him off a grenade, and it killed that boy. Always ended that story by saying be kind to all people.

My paw paw fought in that battle. He said it was the coldest he’d ever been and would never be cold again. Anytime it got below 60 he had a sweater and a knit cap on.

Mine always hated the cold too. He practically raised me along with my dad because my parents were divorced. He died a few years ago but lived well into his mid 90s and his mind was still sharp until the last year.

Because the Germans only passed through the Ardennes in 1870, 1914, 1918, and 1940...but it was too rugged for tanks!

My Uncle Johnny was there. 4th Armored division- Watertown New York . He got shipped out for “ battle fatigue “ at some point. He lived in Long Island after the war and looked eerily like Buddy Hackett and he drove a big American sedan with Little American flags on the front and he hated Nixon and he drank beer like it was water . Married to my Aunt Dottie recently deceased. Miss all those people- they were a different breed.

I sadly know very little about this battle. Of course, I’ve always heard about it but I know very little about what and why it occurred. I think I found my reading topic for the rest of the night.

Go watch the Band of Brothers mini series. Only one episode covers this battle but it's pretty awesome.
