Ol Baw has lots of support in this thread. For as badass as the OT wants to be, they are pretty weak on the dog front.
Watch out, they’ll stick you with downvotes lol

You are looking at numbers that the AKC provides based of dogs registered with them. They don’t take into account dogs not registered with them. So those numbers don’t mean the most popular in the world out of all dogs. They mean the most registered breed in the AKC. Two very different things. The numbers you show account for less than half a percent of the total pit bull population. I never said they didn’t attack the most. Some breed will always attack the most. Get rid of pit bulls and some other dog will attack the most. Should we then get rid of them? Following that logic, we would eventually get rid of all dogs. Can you logically say that since less than half a percent of them attack, they are all bad and should be banned?

Genetic testing of ‘mutts’ in the US suggests that German Shepherds are the most common genome in mixed breed dogs with Labs coming in second. So between registered and unregistered based on this study, I assume labs and German shepherds are close to tied.

I am not necessarily suggesting a ban, just that people need to be aware of the dangers these dogs present, particularly to children, due to genetic predisposition to certain behaviors and often exacerbated by the way they are raised and treated.
I literally have no dog in this hunt, I’m allergic to dogs.

Meh. I think the problem is where owners are getting specific dogs, not the breed itself. So many of them are inbred and mistreated, it's not a surprise that many of them are responsible for attacks. I have friends who have pitts from real, reputable breeders and some friends who got a pitt from frick-head down the lane. The former has never caused an issue; the latter had had several issues.

The most important thing here is that we not profile ALL pitbulls as terrorists. Most pitbulls are just trying to live their lives and chase tennis balls. In fact, the dog mentioned in this article isn't even a real pitbull because pitbulls by definition are peaceful. And let's not forget all of the horrible things poodles have done

Again, look at where you are getting your numbers from. That article doesn’t even say how many of the 36,000 dna kits they sent out was returned. Plus, there are millions of dogs in the world. That number represents a small portion of the dog population. Also, how did they pick who to send the kits to? Need more info than that to draw anything from that article. I do like in the article the part about amstaff’s. They are pitbulls.
Also, so since less than half a percent have attacked, they are predisposed to those behaviors?

Well I bet even less of a percentage of bears have attacked people, and we have hunting season in some parts for them. Maybe it's time for pitbull season.

This board needs pitt threads and I like to set the tone early.
I always hate to hear about dog attacks. But I guess I'll just repost my pitbull rant...

Yep. They're all vicious as hell.

I've been bringing mine to work everyday for about 10 months. And this isn't in the job trailer on some small time residential project. It's a $100+ million major infrastructure project. I'm pretty sure they like her more than me around there. They definitely bring her more treats than me.
A little history lesson...
From the dog's initial breeding in America, they were bred to be very friendly with humans. Their job wasn't to protect their family against people. It was protect them and their farms against animals that would hurt their crops and animals.
They used to be the all-American breed of dogs. More popular than Golden Retrievers and Labradors. They were commonly used in advertisments, for companies like RCA and Buster Brown. You had Petey from the Little Rascals. Even the United States government used them in World War 1 ads.

So what happened?
People moved out to the suburbs after WW2, and other dogs became more popular with middle class families. Less tough and more friendly looking. Pits became more popular with lower economic class people, often still in the bigger cities and in the country. Eventually, scumbags got a hold of the breed. And that's where the breed's problems began.
The 3 major breeds known as pitbulls (American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier) came from an extinct breed called the Olde English Bulldogge (yes, that's the actual spelling). That breed was used for a sport called bull baiting, which was outlawed in England in the early 1800s. So the desire to please their owners, their tenacity, and the instincts to fight other animals at their owner's command was buried in there. Which made it appealing for scumbag fighters.
But for decades, even dog fighters intentionally bred them against aggression towards humans. If a fight was going on, and they needed to stop it, you wanted to be sure they didn't go after your hand.
By the late 80s to 90s, a new batch of dog fighters appeared. They started fighting their dogs to the death. Almost sociopathic. They also became more popular in ghettos, and with rappers. Now random douchebags with inferiority complexs, started getting pitbulls to look tough and guard their house.
But pits aren't supposed to be guard dogs. If you raise them around people, and they are a part of the family, they have great, affectionate, loving personalities. But training them to be a guard dog is against their instincts.
You want a guard dog, get a Chow, a Doberman, or a breed that was bred to be a guard dog. These trashy scumbags, just turn the dog into a wildcard, a loose cannon.
Dogs almost always attack out of fear. And by chaining them up outside all day, not socializing them, mistreating them, or raising them to be a guard dog, they're are scared as hell.
Now I'll admit, they're not all good dogs. Because of their popularity with trashy people, you have puppy mill pitbulls. And that's a huge problem. This isn't a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian. This is a 50-80 pound dog, that's incredibly athletic. It can, and has, killed people. When any big dog has bad breeding practices, it can and will be as unstable as any breed.
In the first month where I'm working in Arkansas, I had four people ask me to buy my dog. What kind of person would ask a stranger walking their dog, at night, if that dog is for sale? I was mad as hell every time. She's a 4 year old dog. It was obvious these trashy POS's had ulterior motives.
So go right ahead and ban all pitbulls. What do you think will happen? Do you really think these same scumbags will never get another dog? Of course they will. They'll just imbreed another type of dog. Maybe it'll be boxers or German Shepards, etc.
If you buy your dog at a flea market or a Walmart parking lot, you deserve to be slapped. You are the problem.
If you want to make legislation to protect against dog attacks, don't limit it to just pitbulls. Any dog with a shitty owner can be a problem. And if that dog is more then 20-25 lbs, it could seriously hurt a child. Make dog owner responsible for their dogs. Because if my face is getting chewed off, I don't care if it was a pitbull or a Labrador. My face is still gone.
Make regulations that create better owners. Require dog licensing. Make first time dog owners take a class on how to train and raise a dog. Keep it affordable. We've got the technology to teach and keep records. And if somebody can't afford a $50-100 class, then they shouldn't get a dog.
And if you bothered to read that, and still think all pitbulls need to die, then this is what my bitch thinks about that.
