St. Claude ave and some other street. Can't remember
She watched a car come careening down in the opposite lane, cut right in front of her and drive into someone's yard. 5 bangers jumped out and ran into the house while she floored it and got out as fast as she could
The other incident, she was on the phone with me and while stopped at a light, a loud "crack" is heard scaring the crap out of both of us. It sounded like a rock hitting the windshield only 3x's as loud. I inspect her car and find small dent in the A-Pillar consistent with a richochet
I drive that 2-4x a day, a number of times late at night. Before Katrina, that area was rough AF and I saw all kinds of sketchy crap. Nothing since then. I'm more likely to have to swerve to avoid a drunk white hipster riding their bike in the middle of the road, then see anything your wife has seen.
I'm sorry those two things happened to her.

quote:I went to Holy Cross, so I was always in that area preK. our cross country team ran throughout the neighborhood, we always went to the corner store on the corner of Reynes and St Claude, or wagner's meat. They never bothered us, I'm guessing they didn't want the extra attention of robbing white boys

I ran track and CC at HC and never got messed with. Would run to that park by the levee and hang out sometimes when we didnt want to put miles in.

The lower 9 is still sketchy af, probably bc they're all in Arabi and Chalmette now... Y'all will see in a few years when the census numbers come out

Anything in metro NOLA I want nothing to do with and would never consider raising children there. BR is getting there too..

I remember going to K-Mart in Chalmette when I went to my grandparents' house. They carried a t-shirt for years with this on the front --
WHERE IN THE HELL IS CHALMETTE?
On the back it said --
ABOUT 30 MINUTES FROM YSCLOSKEY!
Sorry, I'm not from there and I only visited. I had to look up the spelling.

Jackson Barracks kind of keep the crap out
Plus, the strategically placed St. Bernard Police Station right on the Parish line on St. Claude Ave. is a pretty good deterrent for miscreants wanting to do mischief in St. Bernard.

wagner's meat
Used to work there when I was in high school. Paid decent and could get home in time to do homework. Never had any issues with anyone and the people who lived round there would take care of you if they knew you.

The Arabi food store used to have some kick arse meals.
There's 2 from what I remember. There's the one on Friscoville across from the old Arabi Elementary School and the other is off Claiborne to the right if headed out of the Parish. One was more of a food store/sandwich shop and the other was a bit more of a sit down place. Both with good food.
Arabi Food Store on Friscoville made one of the best Muffaletta's I've ever had. Better than Central Grocery in my opinion.
