Hurricane Katrina didn't just devastate New Orleans. When it hit nearby Arabi in 2005, it tossed trees onto homes, turned over cars, and leveled local businesses. Most houses that weren't ruined were damaged by winds or flooding. This pushed prices all the way down. But as the region and the national economy have improved, many new homes have gone up, while others have been remodeled.

“Everyone said it would take 10 years to come back, which it did,” says local real estate agent Lara Schultz of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. "We’re [finally] gaining momentum again with new construction."

Just about 20 minutes from downtown New Orleans, Arabi is attracting both middle-class families and single, female buyers, Schultz says. They’re coming for the new homes—usually cottages, with high ceilings and porches. Or they want the town's remaining historical homes, which often date back to the early 20th century and were made out of salvaged wood from ships.

Da Parish is booming!

used to be a great place. but, since it directly borders nola, it gradually started to suck. can't imagine that area post-katrina.

Jackson Barracks kind of keep the crap out

Also... the 9th Ward really ain't that bad these days, if only because it's still very sparsely repopulated. Central City and the East are much, much worse.

You should visit. It's becoming a very gentrified area, kind of a hipster place, with some art places, bars, etc.

used to have friends and family who lived on Friscoville across from the school. Was a nice place back then. I do visit the parish a few times a year but, don't have a reason to venture over that way.

The frick you say...

My wife used to have to drive through that area to make sales calls at the plants. Her car got hit with a stray bullet one time. She also watched a gang roll up on a house and bumrush it while she was at a traffic light.

St. Claude ave and some other street. Can't remember

She watched a car come careening down in the opposite lane, cut right in front of her and drive into someone's yard. 5 bangers jumped out and ran into the house while she floored it and got out as fast as she could

The other incident, she was on the phone with me and while stopped at a light, a loud "crack" is heard scaring the crap out of both of us. It sounded like a rock hitting the windshield only 3x's as loud. I inspect her car and find small dent in the A-Pillar consistent with a richochet

I lived in da parish for 25 years and im there 4 days a week for work nowadays. The new construction homes they are building in Arabi look incredible and although the price per square foot is rising fast, they are still very affordable compared to Orleans parish while only being about 10 min away. Yes you have to drive through the 9th ward, and the st. claude bridge is a pain in the arse, but the is virtually zero crime and great schools down there. If they ever get the Florida Ave bridge built (not holding my breath) it would cut the time getting anywhere to/from st bernard in half.

I have one memory from a Slidell night parade when I was in high school of some drunk white trash guy walking around after the parade shouting AR-AAAA-BEEEEEEEEE over and over again. I'd never heard of the place before.

I just assumed it was some West Bank shithole as this guy fit the mold perfectly.

Lagraize Builders and Corne Construction are building a lot of houses in the new Heights of Arabi area (Benjamin/Dominique Streets). Both are good builders and that little spot should be cool once its all said and done
