there isn't enough qualified individuals in the teaching profession

Smart people do not get into teaching anymore. When you weigh the college costs against the 42k/year salary, it isn't hard to make a better investment in your life.

One of the dumbest, yet technically not retarded people I have ever known in my life is a teacher, because he is too stupid or lazy to do anything else. It only took him until the age of 33 to achieve a goal most people can do by 22.

Well it isn't true about smart people and yes in teaching you have some lazy people but you continue to classify all teachers as uneducated and lazy.

Hell in every profession you have people that others consider dumb, lazy, etc but for some odd reason your hate for teachers has clouded your judgement.

Before the last couple weeks I would’ve said I don’t buy this. After the last couple weeks I’m honestly surprised it’s that low. I’m honestly going to have to keep quiet and keep my head down in my building on this because everyone’s lost their damn mind.

I don't buy it to be honest, the survey of my parish and neighboring parishes had over 70% ready to return to work.

It's like the teachers union here came out and said 60% of teachers don't want to return to work out of fear, however, they had less than 15k responses. However those 15k include support staff, parents, and fricking students. So I take it with a grain of salt.

Yea I guess I’d want to see who was asked as well. I’ve just seen a lot up here come out against returning the last couple weeks. I don’t get it.

Teachers are so overvalued. This is what happens when you let a certain group get praised for years for simply just doing a job that anyone of us can do. Muh Heroes!

If nothing else this has made schools realize online and virtual learning needs to be done in conjunction with in class learning. Hopefully it changes the way we actually teach and do schooling in the future.

Yea honestly I’m not against implementing more virtual learning options. That just can’t be the only thing we do. School aged kids don’t have the motivation of college kids to stay on top of things on their own. This past spring our district “froze” grades so we couldn’t lower students grades only raise them. Out of 118 kids I had in all my classes 14 did anything for me. Like 3 finished the work.

This thread seems to be filled with angry people who don’t know much about the profession. Honestly, it sounds like angry parents botching because their child will be home more throughout the day.

The concerns for teachers are legit:

1. People on this board want you to think that teachers are in favor of sitting on their asses and doing nothing. False. Many teachers want to work online. It didn’t work last time because it was done in haste. I’ve spent a large portion of my summer transitioning music education to online instruction. It’s tough, and less efficient, but can still work.

2. The concerns I have are not with the virus, more so with the protection I get from the district. Will I have access to enough sanitizer? Will social distancing be enforced...or can kids get away with ignoring it the same way they ignore cell phone policies and the like?

I’m not sure why people can’t understand that some teachers are capable of working from home for a portion of the year.

Tangentially, 35% of teachers would, under the right circumstances, sleep with their student while on campus.

One of the dumbest statements in this thread. The attitude that ‘anybody can teach’ is exactly why our education system has suffered as a whole.

Sorry but anyone can teach my friend. I went to a private school and they just read out of a textbook for 4 years. If you can read and make sure kids have their shoes tied, you’ll be alright

I have a hard time trusting anything coming from a teachers union.
