6 or 7 Continents?

quote:
A continent is a landmass with specific characteristics. Each continent is unique, but they are all characterized by two features: ancient, geologically stable regions and younger geologically active areas. The great mountain ranges of the continents are found in these younger regions. Most have extensive plains or plateaus. All of the continents, except Antarctica, are "wedge-shaped," wider at the north than at the south.
By convention there are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica. Some geographers list only six continents, combining Europe and Asia into Eurasia. In parts of the world, students learn that there are just five continents: Eurasia, Australia, Africa, Antarctica, and the Americas.
To some geographers, however, "continent" is not just a physical term; it also carries cultural connotations. For example, Europe and Asia are physically part of the same landmass, but the two areas are culturally diverse. (That is, the various cultural groups in Asia have more in common with one another than with those of Europe.)
I've never thought Europe should be considered it's own continent and a quick google search (above from Nat Geo) reveals some agree. Eurasia makes much more sense if the technical definition is applied?
What does the OT say?

Europe is its continent in a cultural sense and state of mind, but it is not, geologically speaking.

First a new ocean and now this? I can only take so much.

I think it probably just depends on context.

Don't tell me who to doubt.

There are small connections between Africa and the middle east
and between north America and south America.
so technically there are three.
Antarctic being 3.
there are 1 Europe. 2 Asia. 3 Africa, 4 North and 6 south america and 6 antarctic. I suppose Australia fails to impress.
Australia seems big enough. Same size as Europe? Less people. antarctic has NO people. No idea why Australia fails to meet the requirements.

Any particular land mass should be allowed to self-identify as whatever it believes it is.
For example, the land mass between Mobile and New Orleans self identifies as "Mississippi", which while odd, is their right.
