Has social media reduced the degree of separation?

The original theory dates back to the 50's and 60's.

In 2016, researchers at Facebook reported that the social media and networking site had reduced the chain length of Facebook users to three and a half degrees of separation.

The typical Facebook user has 155 friends, but only describes 50 of them as friends in real life, according to a 2014 study from the Pew Research Center. Thirty-five percent of people have Facebook friends they've never met in person.
The original theory dates back to the 50's and 60's.

Six degrees of separation is the theory that any person on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries.
quote:
In 1967, American sociologist Stanley Milgram devised a new way to test the theory, which he called "the small-world problem." Milgram randomly selected people in Kansas and Nebraska to send packages to a stranger in Boston. The senders knew the recipient's name, occupation and general location. Each participant was instructed to send the package to a person he knew on a first-name basis who was most likely, out of all the participant's friends, to know the target personally. That person would do the same, and so on until the package was personally delivered to its target recipient.
Although participants in the small-world experiment expected the chain to include at least a hundred intermediaries, it only took on average between five and seven intermediaries for each package to be delivered successfully. Milgram's findings of the small-world project were published in Psychology Today and inspired the phrase "six degrees of separation."

I'd say you'd need to have met them face to face.

I thought it was 3.14. I’m so confused.

The guy was in the PhD program at Harvard during their MKUltra research phase.
Stanley Milgram wiki page
quote:
He applied to a PhD program in social psychology at Harvard University, and was initially rejected due to an insufficient background in psychology (he had not taken any undergraduate courses in psychology at Queens College). He was eventually accepted to Harvard in 1954 after first enrolling as a student in Harvard's Office of Special Students.[2]

I don't use Facebook anymore because I'm still social distancing.

That's essentially what the article states, which I disagree with. Being on a friend list of Facebook does not necessarily mean you're connected to that person. This sounds like Facebook trying to be more than it really is.

This would happen regularly. Some people i had never met or been shown i might know would come to new orleans for jazz fest or mardis gras. They will be visiting with people I do know in new orleans, and before they leave town facebook is suggesting these people as friends to me.

Because we’re literally defining connections as how many clicks there are between people on a website.
