51 years ago today.....the Apollo 1 fire took Grissom, White, and Chaffee from us

Gus Grissom was the second American to ever fly in space, White was the first American to walk in space and Chaffee was a rookie astronaut.

Terrible. Difficult to imagine a worse way to die. How did NASA ever decide it was a good idea to put humans in an oxygen enriched environment full of electronics?

I saw an episode of some conspiracy show on AHC the other day about this, apparently one of them was going to blow the whistle on the space program being fake.

Those modules were terrible. After an earlier training session, the astronauts left a lemon on the control panel.

Honestly, calculated risk... they still ran at 60%, which is triple normal o2 levels, in subsequent apollo missions.

Which is why the safety precautions weren't up to snuff. There was a lot of blame to go around.

These men made a huge sacrifice but saved the lives of countless astronauts behind them. Had this happened in space we may not have known that the oxygen was the cause of the fire and subsequently sent additional crews up with 100% oxygen. The sad part is that the Russians burnt some guys up the same way a few years earlier but they never released that info so we had no idea at that time.

Mercury and Gemini both used pure O2 environments. The original spec for the Apollo module called for a mixed gas environment, but was changed to pure O2 because it was a simpler system to operate and maintain, but primarily to reduce weight.
NASA considered the pure O2 to be an acceptable risk because it was only pressurized to ~5 psi when in space. The problem was that during tests on the pad, they pressurized to 16.7 psi to simulate the same pressure differential they would experience in space.
The solution to the problem was largely the work of LSU's Max Faget. In tests and flights after the accident they used externally supplied mixed gas to pressurize the module on the pad, vented after launch, and repressurized to 5 psi with the module's pure O2 system. The astronauts were on their personal supplies of O2 during launch.
NASA eventually went to mixed gas for the Space Shuttle program.
