42,000 homeowners are looking for a new insurance policy as of Friday. The company, Southern Fidelity dropped them and now they have 60 days to find a new policy.

Nearly 100,000 policyholders total have been dropped by Southern Fidelity, Lighthouse Excalibur and Maison
Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says six companies have pulled out completely and more than 50 have stopped writing new policies below I-10 and I-12, making the state’s insurer of last resort, Louisiana Citizens, the only option for most. Southern Fidelity customers have until September 13 to find a new policy or sign with Citizens.

Lighthouse and Maison have until August 28.

If you sign with Citizens, the coverage will be retroactive back to the day your policy was canceled, so there’s no gap.

Donelon says the number of Citizens’ policies has jumped from 35,000 to 82,000 and he expects it to grow to 95,000.
quote:

Many homeowners with canceled policies say the Citizens’ quotes they’re getting are simply unaffordable, like one Lafitte resident who was quoted $41,000.
Areas like Lafitte, where they’re seeing $24,000 quotes, fear they will be priced out of their homes.

“I would tell them to do what our friends and neighbors over on the Gulf coast in Mississippi have been doing for the past 15 years, and that is to build higher and to build stronger,” Donelon said.

Others that weren’t canceled say their policy renewals are tripling. An Irish Channel resident reports looking at $15,000.

Donelon says many companies are realizing they’ve been underinsured. Collect your premiums right up until hurricane season POS

I thought that greedy plaintiff lawyers were the problem. Surely it can’t be the poor, innocent, altruistic, mom and pop insurance companies. Why not give up a few more rights to entice these noble companies to return to Louisiana with lower premiums?

That’s exactly the problem, buddy. Ask anyone with knowledge about the situation.

This is not helping to make a tough situation any better. This will require smart thinking at the moment.

At some point houses become uninsurable. The wetlands are almost gone. Most of these houses will keep getting wiped out if there is even a strong Cat3.
The insurance companies have obviously done the analysis and don’t think it’s worth it. You can’t say they are being greedy when they are essentially saying they don’t want the business.

If we have a quiet hurricane season, we should get some more carriers to come in but if it’s another bad year, we’ll likely see it get worse.

frick that. build lower, and mobile. When the next 'cane comes, unhook the sewer nd shore power, then pull home to Leesville, or Hammond, as necessary to escape the storm. Return home when power comes back on.

You sound like you ate the propaganda hook, line, and sinker. When it comes to homeowners insurance, not one bit of them moving out of the state has a thing to do with plaintiff’s attorneys. I’m not here to defend plaintiff’s attorneys either.

If you want to blame someone, blame the insurance commissioner, the zoning authorities, and local governments that have allowed people to build in places that are very flood prone either due to regularly occurring rain or hurricane surges.

Now when it comes to car insurance, plaintiff’s attorneys may have something to do with those high premiums. How else do you think Gordon and Callahan can afford all those commercials and big buildings. I’m not for tort reform though. Insurance companies ultimately decide to settle for amounts because a formula tells them to. You’ve got to fight back if you want to start gaining ground.

Is it though? Are insurance companies obligated to insure your house that resides underwater?

What is the problem with them getting insured by larger companies like State Farm instead of these little ones?

State Farm isn’t insuring 80% of structures below I-10 and hasn’t for years. Besides, even if you are able to obtain State Farm, it’s almost as good as not having insurance at all.

"Jim Donelon overstepped his authority when he ordered insurers to cover evacuation expenses for policyholders who fled Hurricane Ida from parishes that didn’t issue mandatory orders to leave, a judge has ruled."

Our insurance commissioner disregarded the language in a written, legal contract to retroactively add additional coverage. What business that has any hope to stay in business would accept that.

Now they have passed a new law in LA which circumvents the contract language. Winning against the insurance companies is a zero sum game. The more they have to pay, the more they have to collect. When we ask them to pay for more than they can collect, we are shocked that they leave.

According to the propaganda, it’s the insurance companies fault.
