Holy hell I’m getting old. I vaguely remember the reports about old man who lived at (or near) the base of the mountain. He refused to evacuate and kept getting “harassed” by reporters in the days leading up to the eruption. He was ornery and did not give a frick...

This was a big story for 9 year old Sao. Really limited video and such at the time but wow, what an explosion.

My wife and her family were camping In western Washington when it blew. She got home before the ash coated everything.
Going to Johnston Ridge Observatory is a great experience. Any of my visiting friends or family that come to here, we try to take up there if they hadn’t seen it. When you hear Johnston’s voice saying “Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!” and the curtains in the theater open up to reveal the massive mountain, it’s absolutely sobering.

What's really freaky is that Johnson was about 6 miles away when it erupted and all he had time to do was make a 5 word radio call.
I went about 12 or 13 years after the eruption. The observatory wasn't built yet. It was mind boggling to see the landscape changes and estimates of how much Earth was moved. I think the level of Spirit Lake rose about 200'. Harry Truman is in the world's deepest grave.
