The only part I’d love to figure out is how/why they were in a plane in the first place?

In remote regions, it’s not uncommon to fly places. There ain’t roads. There are dirt landing fields. And certainly most indigenous probably don’t fly very often but they certainly could if they need to go to a bigger village for a hospital or something like that.
