But for the decision of one man, Civilization as we know it would have been obliterated in nuclear hellfire on September 26, 1983.

Stanislav Petrov

Yes, this dude right here saved the world.

and now ironically he's going to melt down all of Eastern Europe with that shoddy power strip. eta: RIP -- didn't realize he'd died a few months ago.

Think about the balls that took. He completely defied every SOP that was required of him - which, in theory, could have led to his country's demise - all due to intuition.

Yep. Had this guy simply done what he was suppose to do, the world as we know it now would not exist.

True but he did cite to some fairly logical factors that helped him make the decision, though he also said he was never sure (yikes), like that it was unlikely we would have fired only five missiles.

Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (also known as KAL007 and KE007)[note 2] was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On September 1, 1983, the South Korean airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor. The Boeing 747 airliner was en route from Anchorage to Seoul, but deviated from its original planned route and flew through Soviet prohibited airspace around the time of a U.S. aerial reconnaissance mission. The Soviet Air Force treated the unidentified aircraft as an intruding U.S. spy plane, and proceeded to destroy it with air-to-air missiles, after firing warning shots which were likely not seen by the KAL pilots.[2] The Korean airliner eventually crashed in the sea near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Larry McDonald, a Representative from Georgia in the United States House of Representatives. The Soviets found the wreckage under the sea on September 15, and found the flight recorders in October, but this information was kept secret until 1993.

Bad time for a nuclear war scare.....I'm surprised Americans were not actively fricking with the soviets after this.

This is something to remember given current tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Is this what that Denzel submarine movie was based on? I liked the racial twists they added.

Yet very few people knew he died back in May. A German journalist had covered Petrov's story since the story was uncovered after the fall of the Soviet Union. The journalist called him a couple of weeks ago to wish him a happy birthday. Petrov's son informed him that Stanislav died in May.
