Not sure exactly where the site is. But good news.

A Texas company is considering building a $3.24 billion manufacturing plant in Westlake that would turn natural gas and renewable gas feedstocks into blue methanol.

The Lake Charles Methanol plant at the Port of Lake Charles would create 123 direct jobs with an estimated average annual salary of nearly $136,000, according to Louisiana Economic Development. The plant would create 605 indirect jobs in southwest Louisiana. The project would create more than 2,300 construction jobs at its peak.

The plant would turn natural gas and renewable gas feedstocks into low carbon hydrogen, while capturing carbon dioxide. The hydrogen would be used to annually produce about 3.6 million tons of blue methanol. Industrial manufacturing processes are considered "blue" when they use carbon capture to mitigate emissions.

Industrial work in South LA is really moving in the right direction. I’ll take all we can get.

The OT talks smack about Louisiana's economic outlook. A lot of that is very fair and reasonable criticism - likely driven by understandable frustration from having move to another place to get a promotion, seeing friends/family move away to build their career, etc.

But the truth is that New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lake Charles have an industrial base that meet or exceed the blue collar opportunities present in far larger metro areas (except Houston....that place is an economic powerhouse).

Louisiana's cities fall woefully short with white collar jobs, corporate headquarters, tech, etc. especially as Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas sucks a lot of our talent and opportunity away. But our industrial and engineering sector has been very strong for quite a long time and has a lot of momentum behind it. We routinely see announcements of major expansions or new facilities in excess of $1 billion or more.

These major industrial expansions are quite astounding considering the relatively small population and very limited highway/rail network in south Louisiana. Deep draft port access along the Mississippi River and in Lake Charles goes a long way, especially in conjunction with a very well developed pipeline network and a workforce accustomed to handling that type of work environment and culture.

if you have one, especially in stem....its one of the best too if you are willing to work in an office in the plant or an engineering firm and not be in a high rise somewhere.

engineers here in LC make way way more than national average.

Maybe 15-20 years ago. You'll need at least a A.A.S (P-Tech) degree.

This is true. It’s a great place if you’re a blue collar guy but white collar jobs are few and far between.

The state doesn’t place much emphasis on retaining educated workers and they run off corporations like community coffee and canes.

I think Louisiana would do well building out some roads and higher quality planned residential/retail areas to support all of these major employers around Lake Charles and Baton Rouge.

Neither area has a lot of high quality, well developed suburbs yet. The areas that seem to have some real growth are also not investing very much into their own infrastructure.

Which makes the articles even funnier with how they use such specific numbers.

Was true for many years but my employer has recently opened up qualifications to people with experience in the industry. They’ve also improved on hiring maintenance & T/A planners from the contractor groups that have years experience in the facility.

Lake Charles sucks bad. Traffic is so bad. Most of the city is ragged and run down there’s a few small pockets of nice areas but generally it’s crap. Sulphur is worse.

Beauregard parish especially the southern part is gonna continue to grow. Nothing but wide open land out there. No wetlands stopping growth also. Just timber that is cleared easily.

It will never be ready in time.

Curious if Landry can successfully chance the public participation regulations. Not sure what he wants to change but I think the gist is that the Landry administration wants to limit who can challenge permits in court. This is in response to the years long standstill for all of those plants along the Mississippi River.
