had just gotten to Lakenheath a couple weeks before this mission went off. Got to watch some glorious intel footage from our 111’s a few weeks/months after the attack.

Because of Frances sorry azz our 111F pilots and wizzos were in the cramped cockpit for over 13 hrs. Many had to be helped/winched out of the cockpits.

True story....and a big FU to France.
As the bombs were dropping an SR-71 left out of Mildenhall AB on a bomb damage assessment recce mission. It refueled , flew to Libya, (at xx,xxx ft over France) took photos and was back at Mildenhall with the BDA pics being analyzed before the first 111 landed at Lakenheath 8 miles away. This includes a cooldown period before the ground crews were able to handle the sizzling photo equipment area....

That , son, is cooking! ;)
intruders and aardvarks did some damage that night...

I loved the F-14. Could shoot you down 100 miles away. Great airshow plane as well.

The Tomcat was such an awesome fighter. The Hornet is cool and everything, but the Tomcat was just sexy as hell.

I also remember Ronnie slapping around the Iranians a few times, as well.

Listening to the pilots breathing becoming more rapid was even intense.

I was TDY to R.A.F. Chicksands at that time and me and three others had to go to Lakenheath install some equipment one week before this went down, we knew something big was happening but didn't know what till it was over.

From the sound of it, they engaged an enemy fighter below the hard deck. That's grounds for getting their asses chewed.

couple of weeks after the Libyan sponsored downing of a commercial airliner of Lockerbie,

Pan am flight 103. 270 people. 190 were Americans.

The one guy they found guilty was released by Scotland in 2009 on compassionate grounds because he had cancer or something.

So... these four shoot downs amounted to about doing jack shite by Reagan.

The shootdown I saw, the air crew was very mundane until the back seater.. chimed in "WHAT THE FACK DID YOU JUST DO!..... MAY DAY MAY DAY WE JUST SPLASHED A FOX 4.....

Yes of course. There was a lot going on. The sanctions imposed after the bombing were a much larger problem for Libya then anything done by the military.

If you drop a bomb on my house and kill my daughter while I am outside peeing.. you gonna get my attention...

the military strikes(not the air to air skirmishes) certainly showed him we meant business.

(not the air to air skirmishes)

kind of needed to set the stage for the strikes, justification because of provocation/ aggressive hostility, etc.
