What a great link with tall the maps and history.
In 1945, there were 8 airfields in and around the city of New Orleans. That's incredible.

And that pilot, and the ATCs involved in that incident on a nearly brand new aircraft.

I know it’s probably a simple fix to airline mechanics, but it’s amazing to me that they put that jet back in use and flew it for 20 years.

I always think about that when I fly. Where has this airplane been? What has it been involved in?

The nearly brand new aircraft was the problem. They were flying through a storm (A storm they probably shouldn’t have been flying in). The engines took in too much moisture and failed. They had to redesign or retrofit the engines to correct that problem. Not sure specifics, but am pretty sure it was an engine design issue. The pilot went on to fly for Southwest for many years.

I flew the Boeing 727, and that was an amazing landing by that flight crew.

Crazy that the gear didn't collapse. It must have been really dry on that levee.

8000 hours in that, who’d you fly it for baw?

ETA: to Quinn, don’t think any of that’s right, won’t bother to look it up tonight though

They found it stripped, on blocks and burnt.

I remember that one and the inside scoop was that one of the seafood bigwigs (Harlan or Preston?) of new orleans was involved and the plane contained a lil something special(drugs) in the seafood it was carrying.

I think there was something about the pilot landing and then leaving the scene. He just turned up missing or something. It was a weird story that left more questions than answers.

I really want to know more about what happened too. I worked for a seafood company when it happened so I heard the bosses talking about it.

This doesn't match up with the official report though. But I wonder what the plane was carrying. I was told that the cargo of fish was all over the place ground where it crashed.

How is someone with 1 eye allowed to be the captain of a passenger plane?

Because he can glide a 737 onto a levee

Don’t know if they guy flew for southwest or not but he plane did, you can get medical waivers for a lot of things but, back then at least,I’m not sure you could fly for a scheduled air carrier with one eye

Didn’t say now, because lawyers, said 30 years ago, when standards had to be met, have a tad of experience in this area, and even if you are able to get a waiver, it doesn’t mean, back then, that the scheduled air carriers would give you a look

Damn, I've only got about 2300 hours in the right seat.

I flew for Express One International in Europe (DHL contract) and in the states for the USPS contract.

Never had to dead stick a Boeing and wouldn't want to try it.

Manual regression, wasn’t fun in the sim, that would have been tough to do in the TACA scenario, don’t know much about the 737, maybe they had an adp? remember Expess One, still in the game?
