Can't believe that was 30 years ago...

It's a good thing Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans had an old abandoned airstrip on its property in 1988. Otherwise, a Boeing 737 from San Salvador might have had no place to land.

How’d they get it out of there?

I love that they also were able to take off around there.

That area is by the flight training area for KNEW, I would always practice my emergency landings over a road. A levee seems a scary place to land in a Cessna.
The pilot of that plane had balls.
Iirc it went on to be a SWA airliner for a decade or so.

After stripping it of all the inferior and putting just enough fuel in to get it to KMSY.

Fixed it and flew it out.

One of the main roads (Saturn Blvd.) through Michoud was the path of the old runway from the Michoud Factory Airfield... a few pieces are still visible in current Google Earth.

It was retired from SWA in 2016.

Thanks for the YouTube link. That lead to this video of a C-17 landing at a muni airport in Tampa instead of the military base.

This. A lot of people that still work at the Michoud Facility remember this day. Landed in a field and took off from a road that had been paved over an old airstrip.

He was a former fighter pilot who was blind in one eye after being shot.

The aircraft was brand new. It had less than 90 hours at the time of the incident.

I'm only rated on single engine, visual flight rules only.
I'm out of medical too.
Was one of those things where I burned $10,000 without much to show for it.
