National Weather Service described three EF-1 tornadoes in the East Baton Rouge, Prairieville and Colyell areas in a preliminary storm survey released Friday evening (June 7).
However, the agency noted that tornado damage had also been found near Killian, Convent and Sorrento—with the damage in Killian and Convent stemming from EF-1 tornadoes and the Sorrento damage consistent with an EF-2. It was not immediately clear Friday night exactly how many tornadoes touched down, but the weather service said detailed information would be available Saturday.
The first of the three confirmed tornadoes touched down at 7:55 a.m. just west of Bluebonnet Boulevard in East Baton Rouge Parish. The tornado lasted about five minutes, traveling nearly a mile and reaching an estimated wind speed of 95 mph. The tornado was about 20 yards wide, according to the National Weather Service.
The twister damaged a warehouse and rolled an empty semi trailer near Bluebonnet Boulevard before crossing the railroad tracks onto the grounds of Baton Rouge General Medical Center. There, the tornado reached its peak strength, flipping a car and then picking up another car and turning the vehicle 180 degrees, setting in on the hood of an SUV parked nearby.
The tornado moved several other cars, but “oddly enough, small trees less than 10 feet away were untouched,” the weather service said.
The tornado then broke a large set of windows on the back side of a hospital building and moved to the main hospital grounds, causing minor damage to the exterior of the hospital and cracking windows.
The tornado moved toward Summa Avenue, lifting at the tree line.
Another tornado touched down at 9:09 a.m. in Prairieville, traveling over a mile and a half in three minutes to Hobard, also in Ascension Parish, the weather service said in the storm survey. The twister’s width measured 50 yards and reached wind speeds of 105 mph, heavily damaging some homes. Some of the damage resulted from fallen hardwood trees, weather experts said.
The tornado ultimately tore away part of a barn roof and then lifted.
A third tornado struck at 9:33 a.m., also traveling about a mile and a half in three minutes, this time through the Colyell area of Livingston Parish.
The tornado in Convent was caught on a dashboard camera: WAFB

They need another one west of the city somewhere in a place that can cover Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

A site in Lafayette just makes too much sense.

I was about 50 yds from one of these. I've never been close to a tornado before but I immediately knew what it was when I heard it.

How the frick there's no weather radar in Baton Rouge boggles the mind. TWO television stations in Lafayette manage to have their own doppler rigs, but not one station in the capital city can be bothered.
I understand they're all shite stations, but goddamn, that's still bad.

I have a better idea.
Somewhere south of Baton Rouge but a little to the west to cover Laffy. I would say Morgan City but that may be too far.
Also, Houma and Morgan City also have issues due to the distance factor. Sometimes I have even seen where Lake Charles and Slidell cancel each other out on the national composite right over Houma and display no rain when it was storming.
If Morgan City was a site, it would also give a deeper look into the gulf and fill in for Baton Rouge and Laffy being 50 and 60 miles away respectively.
I even suggested this on a different post. Venice should have a site. It sits nearly 80 miles from Slidell and a 120 miles from Mobile. Key West even has a radar site.
Radars are expensive and TV stations can no longer afford the sophisticated technology that the NWS deploys.
Some used to have them, but they were a far cry as to what can be done now with rebranding the NWS data as their own branded content from a 3 party provider like Baron or the Weather Company.
I can remember when WWL showed its radar on screen, 1980s and 1990s, it was a black map with sweeps and maybe some blue and red to display storms. It was always wide. There wasn’t enough data points to zoom in to a storm like today’s technology. It wasn’t enough to even know a tornado was coming.
WDSU for a long time was the only one that still had its own proprietary radar site located by its transmitter in the heart of Chalmette. But through corporate cuts, it appears as they no longer use it as I have not seen it mentioned on their broadcasts and they seem to rely on the rebranded NWS data from 3rd parties. If I recall, WWL still has the radar site by its transmitter in Algiers, but it appears they don’t use it.
