This was not research. This was entertainment tv
Williamson and Yarnell shot back to The Weather Channel live
watched their stuff as it happened a million times
that's part of the warning system
ETA: yes they should still abide by traffic laws... fairly certain they don't get special consideration even if they have flashing yellow lights

This will end the weather channel sponsoring this stuff. They may use other people's footage.
As far as them promoting this and sponsoring it. Pretty sure that's done.

It's not a warning system. It's about making interesting tv to attract viewers and spur ratings.
Weather radio and sirens are warning systems.

pretty sure you're wrong
they'll still want visual of storms to watch them develop live
they'll just put in more guidelines for the chasers

seeing this live
is much more informative to the lay person than this...
BTW... both are from last May's tornado in Katie - Wynnewood, Oklahoma

I agree that having live chasers is valuable, but I do think they're gonna stop sponsoring them and just bring in independent chasers on an as needed basis.

If the weather channel is sponsoring and paying these guys there is pressure to produce. When there is pressure to produce video, people tend to press to produce. When they press they speed, break traffic laws and risk the lives of themselves and others.
When this is done for entertainment value outside of a closed race track it puts the public at risk.
When it goes wrong courts and juries are very unfriendly to businesses who support it.

Maybe if the lay person is an idiot.
Stormchasing is done for adrenaline rushes and so people watching safely from thousands of miles away can get a little storm boner.
We have the technology to get the data without unnecessarily putting lives at risk.

So what about all of the other chasers who don't get their streams and video shown on big TV networks? What about the storm chasers who stream becomes vital during outbreaks?
Like I have already said, legit, trained storm chasers play an important role of verifying if a tornado is on the ground and showing a live stream of it. People are more likely to react if they see a tornado is on the ground or hear that there is one confirmed.

Dang, I guess the studies that have been conducted after major tornado tragedies (such as the April 27, 2011 Super Outbreak in Alabama) that have shown people are more likely to react if they see a tornado live on video are just lies.
Radar, while it is making great advances, is not perfect. Believe it or not, we still like to get visual confirmation of a tornado if possible.
There are chasers who do it for the rush, but most do it as part of providing information on the storm, as a part of the larger warning system. There are many storm chasers who don't get paid a dime to do it.

Well, I have to disagree on that.
On the ground trained storm spotters and storm chasers are very valuable sources of information during these events.
Now, if you want to criticize things like these "storm chasing tours" that you can pay to go on, then I'll join in the criticism with you.

I am a storm chaser. I know Kelley and Randy both. They were great guys and have chased with them often. The service that they serve does save lives along with the rest of the chaser community. We need to respect that even if you don't agree with them. Pray for their families and friends, as they will need that during this time.
RIP - Kelley and Randy.

Both parties ran the stop sign.
Storm or not, with oncoming traffic and neglecting the sign will result in bad things.

I hope Bud's Family wasn't involved.
Buford Uan Davis was from Spur.
Well shite. I didn't count on any OTers knowing them. I'm sorry. I wouldn't make fun of anyone local.

Just heard about Kelley and Randy. My heart goes out to their families.

So sorry for the loss of your friends. I have watched/listened to Kelley often and was shocked to hear of their deaths this morning. I can imagine the adrenaline of what they do and they must have been looking to the sky and made a mistake. I can NOT believe the callousness of some posters on here. Crazy that two cars of storm chasers were at the same intersection.
