How long a stretch?

45 days because of a missed warrant for when I missed a simple follow up on a DWI. It was stupid but hadn’t gotten it all straight yet. A friend got pulled over and they checked both IDs and said I had a warrant so come with me. The next morning the judge said 90 days parish prison and I was like WTF! Apparently the lawyers couldn’t do anything about it and I had to ride it out unsure what was going on until with about 8 days left I finally got in contact with someone.

Damn son.

Back in 2000 I spent two weeks in Garland county for a host of charges. A close family friend had her husband leave her for a younger model. Her new dude beat her up pretty bad so myself and her brother went to kick the crap out of him. Police (who I personally knew) showed up and had to taze me to get me off the piece of crap.

It was a terrible decision but seeing a female friend all busted up can make a person not think too clearly. Two weeks in jail, 6 years probation and filing for a pardon with the help of one of the arresting officers taught me a good lesson.

From what I learned jail is shite compared to prison. Guys being shipped from county to prison acted like they won the lottery. The main thing was constantly being hungry. It really screws with your head not being able to eat when you want. First few days I wouldn't eat the crap food but eventually you have to eat it. Dinner came along at 5 in the afternoon and breakfast came at 8 in the morning. After that long stretch you would be ready to kill a guy for a cracker.

One image that comes back to me is a guy in solitary. He somehow managed to get two 55 gallon drum liners and fill them with water. If he was awake he was in his cell lifting that water weight. Skinny guy with popeye arms that looked like he could rip an engine out of a car with his bare hands. The guards just let him keep the bags rather than going through the risk of trying to take them from him. God I hope I never run into that guy out in the real world.

And that is my slammer story

Stand up for yourself, win or lose, and mind your own business and you'll be fine. Not having money on your books sucks and you'll be hungry all the time. State pen is way better than county same deal there, keep to yourself and don't fold when someone checks you. You don't have to win the fight you just have to prove that you'll stand up and you'll be fine. Boredom was the thing that got to me, I read a lot.
