Edit: my drink of choice is typically a light beer. Whiskey every now and then. To clarify, the 40 drinks a week are drank between Friday and Sunday. I don’t drink during Monday - Thursday.

Appreciate any thoughts or advice.

1. You have a binge drinking problem.

2. What is your BMI?

3. Cut down on the alcohol.

I have known 3 people who straight up died from liver failure.

1: My brother drank a fifth of vodka every single day. (died on bathroom floor age 28)
2: My "Uncle" who was a family friend in the neighborhood drank whisky every single day (liver cancer in his 60's)
3: A friend who drank whatever liquor was available to him every single day. (died in hospital age 49)

I have never heard of someone dying from liver failure who just drank light beer. They were all binge drinking likker, every single day.

I'm not a doctor, and this is a small anecdotal sample size, and drinking beer every day is not good for you either.

I just wanted to share my perspective.

Sounds like an irritated gall bladder.

If you're being honest and you are only drinking light beer on the weekends, even though it's A LOT of beer, you probably don't have cirrhosis.

Depends on the side it's hurting.

If it's the left side gastritis makes the most sense. Since he isn't spreading those 40-50 drinks out over 7 days but 3, it's a good candidate for alcohol induced gastritis.

There's plenty of other things it can be as well that are a lot less serious. Hell it could even be IBS, stomach ulcer, hernia, heartburn, acid reflux.

Sure you drink a good bit, no reason to point to the worst case scenario when there's 50 other things before that.

Get on a medical routine with labs every 3-6 months. On most insurance it’s free. They may not paint the complete picture but it’ll verify if you’ve got issues.

Ultrasounds and fibroscans will also help finding out if you’re in trouble or not…you can’t cheat these things; if you abstain for a couple weeks to get good marks and then binge then what’s the point?

Your stomach pain may not be fully caused by your consumption but is certainly responsible for some of it. There also may be other factors at play. A GI doc or your general practitioner can set you up with visits.

As many have echoed, you likely have time to save yourself. Try another vice…NA’s are good at barbecues but you probably shouldn’t simulate a 12-pack of Bud 0.0’s attempting to catch the high. The THC/CBD seltzers or gummies work for some folks who might need something that resembles the fix.

Lastly, give yourself credit for the reality check. Many folks wait too long to figure it out and then it’s too late. Find a good doc, monitor your labs and know how many people would hate to see you throw your life away so early. If those things don’t matter enough, seek some more serious medical help.

You can do this…you’re not the first, and you won’t be the last.

(One more thought…don’t have so many drinks before 30 that you can’t celebrate something really meaningful 30 years from now)

At 27, I would be surprised if you have cirrhosis. That typically takes decades to develop. But getting the bloodwork done is a good idea. Make sure to tell your provider exactly why you want the bloodwork, so he knows exactly which liver test to do.

If you have ever seen anyone die of liver failure, I can assure you that you will second guess your drinking habits. It’s not pleasant unfortunately most addicts don’t know they have a problem or care to address it. I hope you get the help you need because there is a line that cannot be crossed on liver damage and there is no going back.

This prompted me to schedule a doctors appointment to get some bloodwork. I am scared to death that I have cirrhosis as I’ve been a 40-45 drinks a week drinker for the past 8 years.

I doubt you have cirrhosis. But dude... what you're doing right now. It's a hard life. It's hard to drink like that. I'm not full time sober but I've cut way back over the last 5 years or so. The one thing that got me set is that I'd tell myself every morning I woke up not drinking.. that "I feel better when I don't drink."

Everyone’s body is different and alcohol is not processed well by the body in any amount. Some people can drink their entire life and never develop any real issues, others can die from liver failure in their late 30’s or 40’s.

A light burning sensation could be GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease. Do you have any symptoms of cirrhosis such as fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, bruising easily, or a yellowish tint to your skin or eyes?

As others have made clear, those are just rookie numbers. I have drank 30 to 60 beers a week for 22 years now and I'm in some of the best health of my life. I guess it helps that I also run 2 1/2 miles nearly every day and lift 5 days a week. Not everyone is built like us Vikings though.

Edit..I'm also 42 years of age. As my drinking buddy Mike Gundy once said, IM A MAN!

Louisiana. I know a lot of people who have 2-3 glasses of wine or a couple of bourbons after getting home from work, during dinner, or watching tv.

It is on another level in Louisiana. It’s drummed up as “fun”, “cool place”, NOLA!! The fact hard liquor is sold in gas stations helps the closet drinkers of which there are many more than you could ever imagine.

Maybe. But not everyone is the same. Some people can pound it for decades and never get cirrhosis but others aren't so lucky

Doubt he's cooked just yet but it definitely is possible when you are a daily drinker

Drives me crazy that humans have been consuming alcohol for untold thousands of years and we haven’t evolved to be able to process it without permanent damage. Or developed a pill to prevent scarring.
