Theft isn't a victimless crime and deserves to be punished, but perhaps we shouldn't be housing inmates serving a 1yr sentence for something like this with violent criminals?

He probably played gangbanger for two weeks then snitched to be able to get released on time.

Or does that mean "sold out" in a colloquial sense as in "revealed" as being a potential jail house rat?

That close to release? Someone wanted him to do something on the outside. He either refused and they took offense, or they saw his sheet and had issue with it for some reason. But, you'd think if that were the case it would have happened earlier.

He could have also snitched to get a deal and someone found out.

This is one of the main reasons restorative justice gained traction.

We need a lot more low-security prisons that are rehabilitation-focused (which should be cheaper to run) so that judges and prosecutors don't have to feel like they are throwing a non-violent offender to the wolves and building a worse criminal who is far more likely to commit violent crimes.

We can't prevent the cycle for everyone but we can almost ensure it becomes a cycle for almost anyone when we house them with much more serious offenders.

You know, I get that most prison guards are doing good to have a HS diploma, and a lot of them are no better than the animals they’re charged with.

But where the frick were they here?

The fact we openly joke about men being raped in prison is disgusting.

Agree. The government is like “We will harshly punish all crimes including nonviolent, but in the buildings we control we will allow rape and assault.” It’s extreme hypocrisy and it makes the government complicit in violent crimes.

We as a society know it occurs, joke about it, tacitly approve of it, and it is done on our behalf…we are complicit as well.

I know this exists to a certain extent, but it seems like such a simple solution. Even different wings or buildings in the same prison.

We shouldn't be putting non-violent offenders in with the worst of the worst.

"Preventing the cycle" is one way to say "removing a revenue source from the state"

I'm going to go ahead and guess most on this board don't have kinds spending a year in prison.
