similar to what afflicted the once beastly Nissan Pathfinder
Nissan should be banned from the states for what they did to that car.

They just feel...cheap. I say that as someone who would love to find the perfect American or Japanese SUV that is practical and stout and boring with a luxury interior. But it doesn't exist.
A fully loaded Jeep Grand Cherokee has a very nice interior.

For an extra tree-fiddy get the Baw package. It includes truck nuts.

Article is a little disingenuous since you can load up almost any car with tons of options and make it crazy expensive.
Try it with any Porsche model. It's easy, even if your definition of crazy is pretty high.

It’s also really ugly and looks cheap.
Who would drive that?

Who would drive that?

I guess this is for people that want luxury car features in a vehicle that doesn’t scream pretentious.
Which screams virtue signaling.

I had one as a rental a few months ago up in the Smokey Mountains. After about an hour of very moderate driving, the transmission started to overheat and you could smell it burning. I had to stop to allow it to cool off.
You should always take the quality of a rental car with a major grain of salt b/c you never know if it's being maintained properly or if the previous renter treated it like shite.

I feel the same .. i like an SUV that is a nice mixture of rugged and refined, with a little more emphasis on the rugged.. last year i picked up a 2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo X package, so it looks like a run of the mill GC, but it’s got the leather seats, panoramic sunroof, backup camera, remote start and slightly larger tires than a regular Laredo... i think they stoped making the Laredo X pkg a couple years back, so i want to hold onto this one for a while.. otherwise, the most ‘truck-like’ GC you can get with leather seats is a Limited.

They early 2000s escapes were pretty nice. Had a 4x4 in canada as a rental
They definitely looked better than the new ones. Our old Escape had some consistent engine problems though.
The newer ones are even bigger recall queens.

A bunch of em had issues running rich, leading to bad cats, IIRC.

I get idea, I really do. But a Q5 doesn't strike me as pretentious and you can get one for like 3k more.

Even when comparing top of the line versions of a domestic low end vehicle (like the Escape) vs. low end versions of a decent German (like the Audi), there is a certain fit and finish that the American vehicle never has.
German car companies aren't sending us their low end trims. For example, you can't get a BMW or Mercedes here with cloth seats but you can in Europe.

The higher Jeep trims from Overland on up (especially on the Grand Cherokee) are exactly what you are looking for.

So it's either find that fine line or decide if you'd rather be pretentious or a virtue signaler?

Maybe the virtue of not wasting money on something you don’t necessarily need

I have 2005 Escape and put 230,000 miles on it. It’s the best vehicle I’ve owned. Very reliable. I used it more like a truck than a car. The 2020 isn’t the best looking vehicle.
