Gotcha. Personally I'm never gonna be on the side of supporting assisted suicide. It just goes against my own personal religious beliefs. No amount of internet debate will sway me on this.
Granted, that doesn't influence laws that much anymore. All I can hope for is that as a medical professional I'm able to still have the right to object to anything that goes against my religious beliefs while caring for others. I would hate to be in a situation where staying true to my beliefs meant I could lose my job or worse.
And with that, I'll exit this thread

It's a really really tough situation. I don't like assisted suicides, but I always think back to, How is that different from putting a pet down?
Well for starters one is an animal and the other is a human.

She also had physical difficulties and was almost entirely bedridden.
Doesn't sound like someone of sound mind who is capable of deciding her own best interest.
But, I've argued this with the OT before and know it will go nowhere. On here, suicides are viewed as heroic, brave acts and should be celebrated.

Well that's what it is. An idea. And it's only in your head. Cause that ain't nowhere in that article.

What's so bad about suicide? It's not the end of the world, and if it is, who cares? There's nothing you can do about it anyway. Get outta people's fricking business.
Ever heard of medication?

And also, when they frick up their suicide and have to get a shite ton of medical treatment, that drives up the cost of my insurance.. so frick you, it does affect me.

I agree with this statement. It is awful to lose a loved one to suicide, but its also an awful thought to think how much pain they had to be in to make the decision their life wasn't worth living. That's really low, I don't want anyone I know to be in that much pain.
At least this way it is peaceful.

From the article that Darth obviously didn't read.

The consultants also said that despite her 'intolerable' physical and mental suffering, chronic depression and mood swings, she was entirely competent to make the decision to take her own life.

How about a "Do Not Resuscitate" clause in the paperwork it takes 6 months to complete?

As long as she made this decision on her own without being manipulated, I don't have a problem with it.

Nowhere in the article? It's in the second fricking paragraph.

this all goes back to the whole "selfish" arguments..... I always say it's "selfish" for the loved ones to want someone to stick around miserable for their own selfish reasons of not wanting to miss them or mourn their death.
Odds are family member either committed the acts or enabled them as has been mentioned before

What about it? I have no problem with people offing themselves.. I wish half our country would do it. I'm arguing that there are other avenues to try to help someone in her situation. Maybe they tried them and they didn't work. I don't know.

Try reading the rest of the article.
Just because it happened after that, doesn't mean it happened because of that.

You should always be able to put aside your personal religious beliefs when it comes to someone else's clinical treatment. The only things to be considered are the patient's wishes and the clinical information. Your beliefs should only come into play when deciding your treatment.

Your religious beliefs should never outweigh the patient's wishes.

There's a lot of pain on the OT. I worry about some of these kids being so cavalier with suicide.
Posted on 5/11/16 at 1:44 pm to Darth_Vader
Then it's strictly a reading comprehension error. Here's the graph in question.
See, the word "decided" here isn't saying the doctor's "decided to kill her". It's saying "the event was carried out by the girl's decision, after hearing the doctor's prognosis that what she was dealing with, they could not ever stop."
quote:
The woman, in her twenties, was given a lethal injection after doctors and psychiatrists decided that her post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions were incurable

Exactly. That [incurable diagnosis] is simply a requirement before a patient's decision to end his/her own life is accepted. This woman made the decision herself.
Fields of straw men being burned in this thread.

Terrible situation, but I'm ok with it. People should be able to choose to end their life IMO.
