My .02 how long did this mentally ill young lady continue to get help and never find a solution or cure for her mental illness. I think 20ish is young to decide you have had enough and decide it's time to end it. This is a very hard topic from both sides. Did this woman suffer so much mental anguish that there was no return and everyday did she relive it? The person that needs to suffer is the sexual predator that did this. These are the sick frickers.

She wasn't 20, she was 'in her 20s' and context clues in the article indicate late 20s. The article said she had been suffering through this for 15 years. If she wants to die rather than keep suffering, I have no problem with that decision.

taking terminal patients off of life support?

Considering if someone is on life support...it means they would not be able to sustain life without the machines....different situation.

Turning off life support is not considered euthanasia.

OK, this is the official tipping point. Western culture has, ironically and fittingly enough, killed itself.

Just let the Muslims take over. I'm outta here.

Exactly. It's one thing for a doctor to decide there is nothing more to be done to help a person who is dying. But to allow a doctor to decide it's best that someone who is not dying should die, that's terrifying.

I agree. We don't know what she was living through everyday she woke up. Obviously it wasn't good.

Good thing that's not at all what happened. At least according to the article.

So you agree doctors should have the power to decide an otherwise healthily person should die?

Just imagine, if this woman had killed herself with pills, no one outside of her small town would even know who she was or what she did. Knowing this adds a slight wrinkle to the discussion IMO.

wan't the point of my question, though. he said

quote:

For doctors to go on record and say, "There is no hope," is frightening and repulsive.

seems a bit unrealistic to me that a doctor wouldn't have to be intellectually honest and admit this if its true.

People 18 and older should be able to kill themselves if they want to. They owe nothing to anybody. Not much different than a cancer patient refusing chemo or a Non resuscitation order. Sure the family is going to want to do everything to save them but it's not their life and not their decision if the patient has made their wishes clear. This just speeds the process up and if someone wants that then they should be able too.

wow, that's a bit harsh. I think these people must publicly site why they want to die, and give people around or even strangers a chance to convince them otherwise. A guy who was abused could have spoken up and said, I too went through that type of shite and might be able to understand you. Some Millionaire could have swooped in, hey babe I'm 85, if you're game, I'm game. If no one speaks up, or the offers aren't worthy...then you could say, "I'd rather die than touch your wrinkled skin"..and it will be done.

I would be a big fan of you never posting again...

Not because I am offended, you just seem really stupid.

Suicide, while always tragic, is not the problem here. The problem, and danger, is the doctors involvement.

You realize that they tried to help her for 15 years, and in the end were only able to 'temporarily partially' succeed? Then they ruled that she was competent to make the decision to end her own life. They didn't decide for her.

It makes sense. Maybe not to you, but to her.
And it was her life. Not yours.

So she feels happy now?

She wasn't otherwise healthy.

Her condition included severe anorexia, chronic depression and suicidal mood swings, tendencies to self-harm, hallucinations, obsessions and compulsions.
She also had physical difficulties and was almost entirely bedridden.

Wife had a co-worker in her 20s take her life about a year ago for the same reason. Such tragedies.

What happens if the person can't make that decision on their own any longer or lacks the ability to convey they wishes? That's the problem. This first step is voluntary, even though this girl's mental state is in question. The next step will be to "help" those who can no longer "help themselves".

How would you feel about an individual with children deciding to kill herself over a psychological disorder such as PTSD? That no doubt hurts her children, right?
