If I was Governor, I would fire every DOTD employee and contract Texas' DOTD to do all of our shite. They'd have that exit fixed in 4 months and a new bridge in a year and probably be 1/2 the price.

This.

According to Dr. Shawn Wilson, DOTD secretary, five to seven years is the time frame officials are currently looking at for the project to be completed.

Used it this morning. Didn't have coffee so I needed something to wake me up.

I had no idea rush hour caused traffic and delays.

From the painted line that marks the exit, to the point further up the highway where the existing railing makes that "lane" too narrow to exist, it looks like that lane could be extended over 500 feet just by painting new lines.

5-7 years to complete is the correct time, not construction time but POLITICAL TIME>

This allows for every politician to get mileage out of the project, promise things that will never be delivered, get re-elected then scrap the plan only to allow it to resurface before election time

We have seen this for over 30 years

the queue of vehicles that build up at the split is because of the bottleneck, not the exit. the backup caused by a small amount of vehicles trying to weave from 110 to the exit is a drop in the bucket.

that's called the "recovery area" and is a safety feature for vehicles that bail out of their exit at the last minute and need to get back on. no competent engineer will ever unstripe that just to get 500 more feet of merge.

Did you forget the part of this plan that closes the exit? No "recovery area" needed.

That is a given everywhere.

The percentage of parasitic loss due to graft, ignorance, always-been-done-like-dat mentality, inefficiency and poor oversight in Louisiana is much greater than in Texas.

500 more feet won't fix it, man. i don't know what else to tell you. i'm the most anti-sjw you'll find, and even i agree that exit is causing no harm as it is, and 500' isn't enough to consider it.

I thought the same thing when I read that part.

Traffic bottlenecks occur at odd times, like rush hour.

This seems absolutely crazy. It's bad enough that the Baton Rouge interstate and highway system are already based in the stone age. Now they want to throw $20 Million at a bandaid that is going to take 5-7 YEARS to complete.

I know it won't, and I said exactly that. But I'm pretty certain that it would alleviate some pressure until a real fix is finished.

even i agree that exit is causing no harm as it is, and 500' isn't enough to consider it.
Considering the left lane coming from 10 only has 500' as it is to move over to give the right lane room to merge, I think doubling that to 1000' would do wonders.

If you don't agree, how much runway do you think is required to eliminate that bottleneck? Half a mile? A mile?

As of now, the situation is 2 lanes merging down to 1, offset slightly by 500' of road for the left I-10 lane to trickle over to the left to give the right laners some room. Closing the exit and extending the right lane by 500' would obviously result in twice as much road/time to do the maneuvers. Instead of a major interstate funneling 2 lanes down to 1, it would be more like two 2-lane highways coming together as a 4 lane, then 1000' feet later the right lane merges to make it 3 lanes.

Not ideal, but much, much better. And cheap.

Except that they don't want an elevated section and they don't want to tear down that dump between the welcome center and Pinhook to do it.
