I have a feeling that my post there went over your head.

Five to seven years. Just incredible.

2 lanes come on from I-10, and 2 more come on from I-110. that's 4. immediately after the washington street exit, there are 3 lanes because the rightmost lane dropped with the exit. that is the issue. a lane is missing because it drops with the exit.
the fix is to extend the dropped lane (rightmost lane) and keep the 2 lanes from I-10 continuing with no merging needed.
if you close the exit, you still only have 3 lanes after the exit, and you still have to merge. again, just closing the exit does nothing.
in conclusion, that is why you don't just "close the exit and use that lane."

Is there any other place in the country that interstate traffic is funneled down to one lane by design?

I-10 also goes to one lane in San Antonio in both directions.
But... they have a loop. Or 1.5 loops, something like that... not sure if the outer one is complete.

I use that exit when I'm going to football games.

remind yourself what this interchange looks like on google earth, and then think about what you're saying. there is no lane. it drops off.

Absolutely agree. The bigger question is why waste limited funds to build another exit to Washington St. The costs FAR exceed any benefit of doing so. That's a relatively small and commercially unimportant part of the city. Sorry if that is "racist", but it's true. Plus, that area can be accessed by two other exits (Highland and Dalrymple)

I-74 in Indianapolis as it leaves I-465 eastward maybe?

i certainly understand the "disenfranchisement of an impoverished neighborhood" and all that shite. but neither part of the OP's 2-step solution makes sense. you don't NEED to close the exit because it isn't causing the problem, and there is no "lane" there to use. you'd still have to merge, and there would still be a bottleneck. it's bizarro world in here.

I-40 in Memphis does as well I think.

FIFY
Texas looks at problems as something to be solved not something to make their in-laws and baws money.

You must not come into Baton Rouge from the west side frequently.
There are a lot of things causing the problem....only one of them slowing cars crossing I-10 lanes to get from I-110 south to the Washington exit. If it must exist, it should be a left hand exit.

and there is no "lane" there to use.

Is it a real fix? No. But it would be cheap and fast, and would alleviate some pressure for the next 5-7 years.

Typical Louisiana government.
I wonder how the Baton Rouge loop study is going......

I have debated this for years...they extended the merge point years ago but it still isn't really a lane since the right lane must merge.

not all together true. I have seen some crazy shite with cars trying to exit there

I agree 100%

I think most advocates of closing the exit also want the lane extended to 10/12 split
