Man. You went off in a wild tangent.

If someone gives notice, they may be physically present but they are GONE mentally and they have severed the connection from seeing the company and their future tied together for each others benefit.

To keep them around is bad for everyone. But you don't have to be a a douche when walking them off the premises. Quiet and direct.

Just get them off the premises and announce the good news that a new position is a available to their former team.

the present CEO of our company "gave his notice" after about 5-6 years, stumbled his way up the ladder, and eventually came back

I've said nothing about coming back. Only leaving. And the way a proper company orchestrates that process.

Of course people boomerang back, But when they left the first time, they
were happy as hell to be gone.

That's just normal.

I work at a top fourtune 30 company. But our department is small and our team is tiny and specialized.. At any one time, there might only be 1-2 in the world who know our firm, the market, the technology.. Etc etc to avert major shite from happening.

Yeah, I work in finance so it's absolutely mandatory that you take a full two week vacation with no contact with work. Like you'd be in big trouble checking your emails during that two weeks.

And yes, there are/have been issues with managers taking time off too close or overlapping.

You have a job lined up
You have money
Yoy gave vacation time that should be paid

Give two weeks but if they cut you have a plan for a little trip or something in your back pocket

company if things don't work out elsewhere, but if I go to put in a 2 weeks notice and they tell me that I'm fired - things may go sour.

Companies don't fire you, people do.

I've seen it go both ways. Some people put in their two weeks and just stop showing up anyway or just half arse everything.

But if you have a good report with who ever your superior is, put in the two weeks. He or She wont fire you unless you were shite to begin with, or they are just shite people.

That way you don't burn the bridge with the company. And you can just sour on the jack arse that fired you. One day they may no longer be at that company if you do decide to come back.

I assumed the discussion was about about a professional in the organization, not a temp or broom pusher type

Regardless, two weeks is a professional courtesy. Its better to give notice than not.

If they fire you instantly, you really didnt offer anything unique to the companty

Sounds like there's no way to do so possibly, so your best option is the 2 week's notice.

If they fire you, there's nothing you could have done to avoid it.

I may be just oblivious but how are y'all just able to take vacation when you want? Where I work, it needs to be approved up 3 levels at least two months in advance.
I work for a great company. I take my vacation whenever I want, as long as the work gets done.

If they would fire you for putting in your two weeks notice, it sounds like you're on to bigger and better things. Sounds like a shitty employer.

People that have this done to them will NEVER be wanted back at that company. The few I've done this to were on thin ice anyway. Certainly didn't want them to have two weeks to frick around, not do shite and mess stuff up.

A-hole. Just curious, why didn't you fire them earlier?

But once they give you a 2 weeks notice, that didn't seem to matter anymore?

In my industry (pharma sales), it's customary to give a two week notice but I have never been with a company or known of any company that allows you to work out the two weeks.

They don't "fire" you but they go ahead and tell you that will be your last day and will still pay you for the two weeks.

They don't want someone going to another pharma company and still have access to internal info and proprietary information. They also don't want someone half out the door to have access to their company car and go off and do something slapdick stupid in it.
