Just wondering what the standard professional protocol is in this situation - I've landed new job, doesn't start until August. I would like to put in a two weeks notice with my employer, but they are known for just firing people that do put in their notice. Last few guys that have left just straight quit on their last day because they were worried about being fired if they did put in their notice.

Put it in properly exactly 2 weeks before. See if the new company may let you start if you're fired. Never burn bridges.

Real simple.

Don't burn bridges, but ALWAYS look out for YOUR best interest.

Bc no one else will.

If they would fire you for putting in your two weeks notice, it sounds like you're on to bigger and better things. Sounds like a shitty employer.

The last place I worked for was notorious for this. Not a word to anyone. Basically at the end of the day they told you dont come back

Did they cut your final check, or were you just cut off upon firing?

Yeah I don't want to burn a bridge with these guys, I've been here for 4 years. I'd love to come back to this company if things don't work out elsewhere, but if I go to put in a 2 weeks notice and they tell me that I'm fired - things may go sour.

That's just the way some employers do it. If you already have your new job I wouldnt sweat it TOO much. I also think you should never burn bridges, but you also have to realize once you leave its pretty unlikely youll be back. Theres a reason youre choosing the new job over the current one right?

I would just quit dude

Companies have no loyalty

Two weeks notice is a beta move, it won't affect your re-hiring there anyway

I've known tons of good employees get axed over nothing

If this is defined as earned vacation within your company make sure you get the payout

take it. tell your boss it's an emergency. once he approves your vacation, e-mail him telling him while you were on vacation a better opportunity for you came up and give 2 weeks notice. then if they try to fire you, you know you have almost two weeks of approved vacation time coming your way.

how bad do you need the 2 weeks of pay? if its something that is extremely critical for whatever reason then id keep shut until the day i was leaving. If its not that big of deal then id give two weeks and try to start early at the next job.

I wouldn't want to work for a place if they are going to get butthurt and fire you when you try to give them some heads up.

The problem is lack of a 2 week notice can be a red flag down the line.

Yeah, I'm not sweating it financially if they'd can me - I have enough in savings to cover me for a couple of years, much less a couple of weeks. I was just looking for the professional approach to this situation where a company has offered me a raise and better bennies guaranteed. There's no way I'd turn this job down, I was excited that I landed it. Just want to leave with the bridge still erect and passable if I leave but I have seen people put in their notice and get told to GTFO. Happened right in front of me a few months ago.

Id only look at that as a problem if you are laid off and looking for work. If you are moving along and have them trying to poach you then its not going to be a very big deal to them.
