So I have gotten a job offer and am going to accept the offer.
In my current position, I see my manager maybe 6 times a year, talk to him on the phone once a week(maybe once every 2 weeks) and our communication is mostly via email. When turning in my notice, should I call and attempt to schedule a meeting with him or would submitting a notice through email be suffice? Or is that unprofessional?

Ask to meet with him, although I loved the previous responses as well.

I'd call him and tell him you're moving on, but thank him for the opportunity and offer to do whatever it takes to close it all out with the least impact to him.

my last job I had a direct boss i had seen in person twice in over a year. I just told our local HR lady and let her handle it.

Mail a letter for hr's benefit

And drop him an email if you don't want to call, which would be my first option

I've been hired, quit(4 weeks noticed -turned to 1), and rehired by the same dude.

Very Large company, great job

never more than text, no phone calls, no meetings, he may be CC'd in emails and my resume.

Blows my mind, but at the same time, FREEDOM!

10-4. That's what I figured was best. But it's 2016, wasn't sure what is acceptable these days. Youngsters like djangochained have made uncommon practices acceptable.

Thanks for the practical replies

I would probably call him and tell him what is going on...follow up with a mailed resignation letter. no way I would handle any of that with an e-mail unless your boss is 19 years old...

Just put yourself in his position and think what you would tell a potential employer when they called to ask about you.

Never burn a bridge if you can help it.
