According to the article, the nursery was locked and he was unable to get in at first.
He reportedly charged down the hallway from where his girlfriend was in labor and began assaulting nurses and a new mother. Only after that was he able to force his way into the nursery. He must've grabbed a key or broke a window or caught someone walking out.

I've always liked the old NOPD's answer : " unfortunately, the prisoner was shot attempting to escape". But according to columnist Will Sutton in today's Advocate, this is a crime caused by addiction problems & the answer is study the long term causes of said addiction. Will be curious as to what crimes he ends up being charged with.
