“So you won’t be lonely when you get older” is not a sole reason to have children

Not only isn’t it a sole reason to have children, it’s probably one of the worst possible reasons i can imagine to have them.

I find it amusing that some people say it’s selfish to not have kids, but ironically, having them to avoid loneliness when you’re old is selfish af.

And yes, if some of these people aren’t aware of how many elderly folks with kids and grandkids sit around rotting alone in nursing homes for years- then they’re either not paying attention, or they’ve been lucky enough not to be exposed to that reality.

This article is quite indicative of what society pushes us to be: it's all about you and no one else matters.

Having kids is not easy and requires lots of sacrifice. But, like others have mentioned it brings intangibles that all the material goods in the world could never amount to.

I can't think of anything more manly than raising a child.

There is no joy like the love of your children. Watching them grow and learn and have new experiences.

You can keep your weekends in Paris and your cussing and your “deep conversations”.

I’ll take digging up worms and catching brim out of a pond, teaching them to bait the hook, to clean it, to enjoy the experience.

I’ll take making up new words to swear that won’t get them in trouble.

I’ll take conversations with someone who doesn’t know and is trying to understand this crazy world. Crazy stories they’ve made up. Crazy questions that make you think too.

Yeah, single life is fun. But until you have kids you don’t know what you are missing,

yea...we're both 30 and caught in the weird limbo. My wife is really worried about not being to have them or waiting too long, but at the same time we are both really enjoying our marriage as just the two of us right now and can't imagine changing that at the moment

We got kids and we travel whenever we want too and with 7 weeks paid vacation a year we travel often.

I'm child free AND I haven't had a carb in 5 years.

Children complete life. They are hands down the best part about life and not to sound cliche but you just don't know how great they are until you have some of your own. God put us on this Earth, gave us a chance at life, in order to keep life going.

I have some inlaws who refuse to have children and are going to be alone their entire elderly lives. I just don't see how that's appealing.

Agreed. I will add that being an emptynester is a great experience. I love my kids, but I'm glad they are out on their own and my wife and I have some time to ourselves in our peak earning years.

Just make sure you leave yourself time to enjoy marriage after the kids have grown and left the house.

No guarantees that your children will outlive you or that they will live where you are when you reach infirmity.

Often, in the nursing home, noone remembers much.

Saddest thing I saw at a geriatric psych unit was a lovely sweet little old lady who shuffled up to me and asked, "Dear, do I know you?" I said she didn't but she certainly looked nice that day and I hoped the sun would continue to shine for her. She shuffled off and asked the next person she saw the same question.

We are being outbred. Plain and simple. We will lose the war without ever firing a shot because productive people are only having 1-2 kids and those on the dole are having 5-6.

Cool. Some people don't want it.

You say it's "all about you" then say "have a kid for the most selfish reason."

Being a “DINK” (double income no kids) was awesome. Had money with no worries...

However, I wouldn’t trade it for my kids for nothing...
